Chance Me Please

In state, at a public & competitive hs

Rank: UW-58/370 or W 54/370...2nd decile, but technically in the top 15%

GPA: UW 3.74 or W 4.38 (weighted system--add 1 point for each AP or GT course and .5 point for honors course)

AP Classes: Govt, Bio, Calc AB, English Language, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, and Psychology. mostly got As in these, one or two B's. all other classes are almost all GT or honors.

SAT: 1710 (CR 530, M 560, W 620)

ACT: 24 (E-26, M-26, R-24, S-21, Eng Combined-24)

Recommendations, Essays, and ECs are all great

Applied Early Action for Fall 2011 Undecided

I know my test scores are low, but it's the highest I was able to get even with so much studying. As you can see, I really did work hard during my hs career, my GPA is pretty high.

What are the chances of my getting accepted here?
Also, what do you think is my chance of getting accepted here for the Spring Semester (and do Freshmen Connection). UMD is my top choice and I REALLY hope to get in.

bump…

Well, if your reccomendations, essays AND your ECs are great, you should be fine.

Thanks. What about my test scores…would they look at that alone and say “no”? I know it’s pretty low, but my grades and course rigor are pretty good.

If anything, I would recommend getting higher SAT scores.

Thanks, but there’s no more time left for that. I did early action and will find out the end of January, and the next SAT is pretty much around that same time (so scores will probably be sent after they make their decision)

Well ur instate that definitely helps your chances and you have a pretty good rank n great gpa I think even with your low sat score you have a good chance. Goodluck can you chance me back on one of my threads thanks.

Thanks and sure!

Yea Im a freshman, saw a ton of kids with stuff like or worse.

im am ABSOLUTELY positive you will get ATLEAST spring semester.

im 95% sure you will get in regular decision

and there is a really good chance you will get into scholars if you had good extra ciricular activity. i have a friend who had a 1700 flat sat, similar gpa, and played a few sports. she didnt get into the engineering school but got into scholars. you have a good gpa and thats like all UMD cares about

Really…?? That makes me feel a lot better. And btw, what is scholars?

Can anybody else give me their opinions?

The thing about UMD is that they are very numbers-oriented. So a 1090 on the SATs is really going to hurt you. Your GPA is fairly solid in comparison, though so that should help you. Also, are you Howard County? They are the only ones I know that do the +.5 for honors classes.

Thanks, and yes.

I think you will get fall admission if you apply to a non LEP major. Otherwise, it’s a hard to tell. Good luck.

Thanks, and I applied to Letters and Sciences since I thought it would give me a better chance.

^ Choice of major (LEP vs. non-LEP) in no way determines admittance to the University. If rejected from an LEP major, applicants are admitted to Letters and Sciences.

Oh…

Another question-
If you apply Early Action/Priority deadline what are the possible decisions?
I know that they: Accept for Fall; or Accept for Spring (waitlist for fall), or they can simply Reject you.

But do they defer decisions to regular decision like some colleges do? or is it more likely to just get your final decision at the end of January?

I have never heard of anyone being deferred to the RD decision. Realistically RD chances are even lower for any applicant so you wouldn’t want to be put in that pile.

Actually there is a 4th and that is accepted for spring no waitlist option offered for fall aka Freshman connection.

I don’t know how many come off the waitlist, maybe somebody does, but I would think it is a slim number. I know for our DD’s college (VT) nobody came off the waitlist for the last 2 yrs.

The waitlist option only started last yr if I recall correctly, maybe 2 yrs ago at tops, but it did not exist in 08 when our DS was accepted. So it is not something I would bank on for being there because it is pretty new. I think it has a lot to do with them trying to work out the Freshman connection program…which is you go to classes in the Fall after 3 pm, and come January with satisfactory grades, you can move into the dorms and be a traditional student.
