Hello, I am applying to 1 Hades school, hotchkiss
I am also applying to Loomis, taft, nmh, choate, and kent
At hotchkiss I have had 3 relatives attend, and I also got a letter of rec. From an alumni there
My weakness was my SSAT, I got a 70% and a 92 nationally
My EC's include:
Hockey- 10 years, tier 1 team
Soccer-9 years, division 2 team
Lacrosse, 3 years, school team (varsity for 1 year)
Yearbook- editor-in-chief
Community Service- 3 years, school wide and through an orginization
Saxophone-5 years, select band, jazz ensemble, band
Trumpet- 1 year, self taught

I get all A's and B's my gpa is 3.7 or 3.6
My essays were probably average
My interviews went great
The coaches have seen me play hockey and have send they would love for me to play at their school.
So what are my chances?

Hotchkiss: Maybe
Loomis: Probably yes.
NMH: Probably yes.
Choate: Maybe
Kent: Most likely yes.

Your stats are great. The letter of rec seems like an advantage. So your overall SSAT is 92? That’s not bad. Your GPA is decent, and it would have been a plus for you if it was mentioned that you taught yourself the Trumpet in your interview. Which sport would you like to concentrate more on? You have a bunch, and I guess boarding schools want to see passion or drive about one thing - An instrument, hobby, subject or sport. If that comes through well, then you have a good, good chance.

No, I didn’t get a 92, I got a 92 nationally which is a 70%, the averrage for kent and above average for NMH… The schools all know my main sport is hockey and how I am very passionate about sax, I didn’t mention I self taught myself trumpet in the interview but I did on the application.

You seem to have a good chance at these schools. Don’t worry about your SSAT score a 70 overall isn’t that bad. You have great EC’s and will help you out a lot. If you don’t mind me asking what did you get for each indivdual score on the SSAT?

80 on math
70 on reading
61 on verbal
BUMP

Oh, that’s not that bad. I once read on a thread here on CC by a AO, that said that the verbal section doesn’t count as much, because they could just teach you new words, but as long as the math and reading scores are okay it wouldn’t hurt you in a major way.

heps: No, I do not “immediately eliminate” him or her.

The question you’re really asking is, how do we view a 48?

The answer is: it depends. Everything is taken into context; the SSAT score is not just viewed in and of itself. It is viewed in the context of the applicant’s entire profile. A lopsided score just makes us ask more questions, including but not limited to, the following.

1) Which section is it on? Verbal is arguably least important, as it tests vocabulary. We can and will teach you new vocabulary. We cannot teach you to read faster (much of the reading section tests for SPEED, not just comprehension) or the basics of arithmetic (you should have already gotten that). High reading and quantitative scores/skills have shown to correlate more to academic success at Hogwarts. Nevertheless, sometimes a lopsided score can indicate a preparation gap or learning disability of some sort.

Thanks but what are my chances?

I already said you had a good chance. Now that I know your individual scores I still think you have a good chance.
Good luck,
