Not impossible, but the new standards for admission have gotten more rigorous in recent years. It seems the decisions for admission are getting closer on margins. I recommend using lots of flashy pictures in your resume for admission (we are a visual society, after all).

The admissions process goes in tiers. The first tier–when they weed out about 70% of applicants–looks at whether you meet the minimum requirements in terms of your scores (GPA, SAT, ACT, etc.). Once all those applicants have been sized up, they pay more attention to your individuality and likelihood of making a difference in the world. You’ll be competing with lots of talented, gifted, motivated applicants, so writing an essay that deviates from the typical will increase your likelihood of being accepted.

Weird. I sent in a piano CD, 3 extra essays, and about 5 pounds of high school newspapers. The photoshopped picture of me in a bikini and a lolita skirt and holding a humongous rabbit gave it a nice touch. Got in anyway.
