Dear Chickenme : GPA - check. ACT - check. AP Psych Score - check. More APs coming - check. Interested in math - check.

Enough? Not really. Some of our readers might look at those check marks and say you are a Boston College lock. Unfortunately, when I read your profile, I saw those check marks as climbing the mole-hills and missing the mountain staring us in the face.

In reading your brief profile, there is absolutely nothing that connects you to your current High School experience. The clubs (Fed Challenge and Wall Street Society) are likely focused on the economic presentations and challenges presented as opposed to doing something inside your High School. You are not involved with the school sports teams, music, arts, or any leadership positions according to this profile. In fact, you have mentioned both Rutgers and Michigan here more than your High School.

All of this is underscored by your essay topic (inwardly focused) and your recommendations which are coming from folks who spent about one month of time with you from the 48 months of your High School career.

So, the point here is that if you are not connected to your High School experience, what would convince a Boston College admissions counselor that you would be any more connected to the BC Community where “men and women for others” is the core ethic?

Great insight. I am connected to my high school though- through volunteer work and teaching underpriveleged kids. Also the soccer was a freshman team at the high school but travel teams (with other kids from my high school) after freshman year- apparently wasn’t good enough! Main recomendations are from 2 professors and guidance counselors. The recs mentioned above are “over and above”. I am Christian but not really religious so don’t have the church/school connection or really care to. is that really that important? Thanks again for your candid reply.
