I personally think that I'm really lacking in extracurricular activities, and I have kinda low test scores. I would like to know what other people think...Thank you!

Also, I have 2 questions
1) Does the major I decide have a significant affect on my acceptance chances? I was thinking of majoring in Computer Engineering, but I would like to know if it could have a negative impact on my chances on getting into UC Irvine. Should I just apply undecided?

2) Does ethnicity affect acceptance rates? I'm Asian, and I know that UC Irvine has like a student population of 40-50% Asians, but will it have a negative impact on my chances?

Thank you to everyone that answers!

Match

 1. To my knowledge major is considered after acceptance, no point in applying undecided if you decided already.
 2. No, no. That’s illegal for UC.

I have a daughter who is a freshman in Information & Computer Science, and I would say you have very good chances. Her ECs were pretty weak too, but her academics were similar to yours and her ACT score was very high (SATs were high too but ACTs were better). Be sure that your personal statement is well written and follows the format very closely. I really think that is what sways admission one way or the other for kids that are very academically qualified. We attended a college fair where one of the speakers was an admissions rep for the school, and she was VERY helpful in describing how they actually rate those statements and what they are looking for.

I would also definitely declare your major as CSE if that’s what you think you will want, you will need to hit the ground running with that major as there are specific placement tests, etc. that apply to that major. There is no value in declaring undecided if you really aren’t.

Good luck!
