Info about me:
My school is very very competitive.
4.01 weighted 25% top
3.45 unweighted 36% top
28 ACT
Illinois
Major: Engineer
Played Football and other clubs
Asian

My gpa went down from junior year from 3.9 something unweighted and 4.38 weighted was my highest at end of sophmore cuz my grandma died. Currently a senior. I have 5 C's in my transcript took a lot of AP/honors classes.

I’m sorry about your grandma but that excuse will hardly be enough for such a drastic dip in your grades. Going from averaging a 3.9 to getting a 2. something in your junior year is possibly the worst thing that could have happened. It just about kills your chances at all top colleges. Your ACT score isn’t that great to begin with and in all honesty it kind of looks like you just aren’t capable of handling AP classes. You will need to apply to easier schools to get into. Your state school UIUC should be the obvious one you look at.

I don’t know if his GPA and scores will get him into UIUC either. Wisconsin is also a reach. If Engineering is the desired major, I think Purdue is the obvious one he should look at. I would also consider Michigan State and Michigan Tech as options.

thanks guys it was only during 2nd semester of junior year. i can handle ap classes if i tried but i didnt try at all in school during 2nd semester of junior year so thats y i can do ap easily. what should i do then should i still apply and to what other colleges. also, im getting my grades up during senior year

Still, that one huge 2. something dip that recently just about kills you. Your ACT isn’t that strong to being with and then your GPA becomes terrible, you basically can’t compete. That class rank (UW) is pretty bad. Honestly, even a 4.0 this semester probably won’t save you, at least in terms of Michigan. I think you should probably give the colleges the above poster suggested for you and if you’re still interested in Michigan afterwards, try and transfer in. That is the most realistic way you will get in.

I say apply because you never know, maybe your essays are just so spectacular they have to take you. But expect a rejection because those stats are just a little too questionable.

One of the essay topics is about community and heritage. Harp on your Asian heritage and bring up the emphasis on family in your culture; put a spin on your grandma’s death and play it out for all it’s worth here. Don’t make it sound like an excuse, though, and also cover trying to cope with it. By the way, I know the family closeness thing is a stereotype and may not apply, but that doesn’t matter. Make it apply. You have a game changing essay waiting to happen thanks to your race. Put a spin on it.

Your ACT’s okay, and sans the drop, your GPA’s great. Your essays can definitely save you if you put some effort into them. Really, you should be fine, though. Don’t worry too much, and definitely apply. Have a few safety schools, though.
