Chance Me Please!

I'm from Los Angeles and am applying early decision for Colgate.
My most significant extracurricular activities include being the school drum major, writers president, band board president, and varsity golf captain. My recommendations are wonderful and my personal statements are solid. My SAT score is 1970 (CR 630 M 690 W 650) and I want to major in Environmental Studies. However, I have a 3.43 unweighted gpa and a 3.64 weighted gpa which is relatively lower than the average resume at Colgate but I am in the top 10% ranking in my senior class. I have taken 3 AP classes in my junior year and 4 AP classes this year (mostly 3's and 4's) and maintained a 3.9 gpa my junior year.

Ethnicity: Taiwanese
Varsity basketball (sophomore) varsity tennis (sophomore) and varsity golf (junior and senior;captain both years)
Band section leader (junior and senior) Drum Major (Senior)
Founded the school's tutoring program
Working as a cashier since my sophomore year
Community service was going to beijing to help teach english as a teacher (100+ hours)
Science Club (3 years)
Student of the Month (freshman)

I'm extremely paranoid and nervous about my chances so please help me! Any advice given is very much appreciated and thank you!

Good idea applying early. I think your chances are great especially if you’re not applying for aid.

thanks for the response cooper!

My daughter is from Los Angeles, too, and she’s a junior now at Colgate. She’s mixed race. One of her classmates is Hispanic, another black, and a third caucasian. Not all of them were top students, but all were very good students. Her extracurriculars were modest, but her academic interests were very strong even if her GPA wasn’t quite 4.0 and she had traveled a lot, was a great writer, and had many interests and very good reccomendations.

Your scores exceed your grades which make you look like you might not be working very hard. You’d have to show that you are working hard, and your AP courses should help do that. Good grades this year will help a lot, too.

I’d say you would be in the middle of the applicant pool at Colgate and if your reccs and your essay are good, your grades stay high, and you have a little luck, you might be admitted. You can’t be if you don’t apply, though!
