I am a 15-year-old sophmore in high school and it has always been my dream to go to an Ivy League school. I have an unweighted GPA of 4.0 and a weighted GPA of 4.25 (due to the two AP classes I'm taking.) I am also taking 5 honors classes this year, and last year, as a freshman, I took 4 honors classes. I couldn't take AP last year, because freshman weren't allowed to take AP at my school. I took the PSAT last year and got a mediocre, composite score of about 170. I took it again this year and am still waiting for my scores. Hopefully they'll be better! I am going to take an SAT/ACT prep class this spring to prepare to take them, my junior year. Now, on to extracurriculars! I am a competitive figure skater and have won a number of medals, mostly in local competitions. Some people tell me that I need a "real sport," if I want to get into a good college, but I consider figure skating a sport! I have about 90 hours of community service, mostly from volunteering at science and theatre camps over the summer and this literacy program that helps educate disadvantaged children. I hope to get many more hours before graduation! My main interest is environmental science and I have gone to two summer programs (one of which had a competitive application process,) that pertained to my area of interest. I am also involved in the national Environmentors program, which gives high school students who are interested in environmental science, the opportunity to work on a research project with graduate students who are studying environmental science. At the end of the year we will present our projects at a regional science fair and then the top 3 will qualify for the national Environmentors science fair. I really hope to qualify! I am also involved with a bunch of clubs at school. I am in Social Studies club/model U.N. We have biannual Model U.N conferences and I very much enjoy participating in these, because I also love politics! I am also in National Spanish Honor Society (admittance by application,) Science Honor Society (admittance by application,) HI-Y (community service and youth leadership,) and Young Democrats. I am co-founding a National History Club at my school, as well and I am going to be president. I've been playing piano since I was 7 but I haven't done any competitions for it or won any awards or anything. I just play because I love it! I also recently took up guitar, but I am not very good! I am also a junior member at large of my local figure skating club and I teach Learn to Skate lessons at my local rink. (a job that requires proper qualifications.) I am going to join National Honor Society next year, and hopefully obtain leadership positions in the clubs I am already in. I know that I am not an extremely distinguished student, but I am doing the best that I can and I'm hoping to build up my resume over the next 2 years. Could anyone give me advice on what else I should do to improve my chances? I need all the help I can get! Thanks, in advance! : D

I really think the only way that you will stand a fighting chance, is if you get a 2100+ on the SAT. I’m not saying this to discourage you, but simply stating…Its Standford!

Best of luck to you :D

What am I doing wrong? Are there any other extracurriculars that you would suggest? Your application is very strong and I hope to build mine up to be that substantial, by my senior year!

pssst, check your inbox :D

hey thanks for chancing me. im very thankful. it took me like 3 minutes to read all that. hahaha very impressive. i’d say you have a fair shot of getting in. everything you’ve done is pretty impressive. i hope to hear good news from you!

I think that the best thing would be for you to focus on just one extracurricular. I’m not saying to completely give up on everything else, but pick a focus. I feel l personally made a mistake myself by dividing my effort into so many different directions… If you just pick one thing that you really love, and try to excel in that, you’ll have the greatest chance. Whether it’s figure skating, model UN, or whatever… If you become amazing at something, it doesn’t matter what that something is…
Good luck!
