Chance me, please? :)

Hi~ WashU is my #2 school; my #1 didn't work out (did ED for that) and I have a WashU interview tomorrow which will hopefully go well.

Ethnicity/gender: Asian female
Intended major: math
Public high school; I think one of the best in the state? ...I'm not sure. But decently competitive, I believe.
UW GPA: 3.71
W GPA: 4.23 (my GPA is, I believe, my weakest point.)
Class rank: doesn't rank, but I know I'm in top 10% at least.

ACT: 34 in one sitting (36 math, 36 reading, 33 science, 32 English (30 writing and 9 on essay)
SAT: 2200 superscored (800 math, 670 CR, 770 writing). Highest in one sitting is 2130 (800 M, 670 CR, 660 W).
SAT subject tests: Math II (800), Physics (730)

Course rigor: hardest classes available. 11 honors and 8 APs by the time I graduate.

Extracurriculars:
Math team (on state team all four years)
First Class (leadership thing, 10-12)
FBLA (10-11); placed 3rd in state last year
Band (9-12, clarinet)
Orchestra (10-12, clarinet)
Piano (been playing for 12 years)
Tennis (9-10, JV)
Chinese School Teacher's Assistant (9-10)
Robotics (11)

Job experience:
Kumon (half a year during 11); taught kids reading and math

Awards and Honors:
AP Scholar with Honor
National Merit Commended

Essays: decent to good... I'm not sure. People tell me it's good, but they could very well just be being nice to me.

Teacher recs: one is from my English teacher (I know that one's good) and another from my math teacher (probably generic; I didn't talk much in his class. I just did well.)

Counselor rec: generic (he was new this year and based it off of a 20 minute interview)

So I'm not the strongest (my ECs aren't great, not many spectacular awards, etc) but I do love WashU and I'd love to go there. So I come to you, CC, to see if I have any chance at all. :)

I posted something like this a month or so ago, and please don’t take it as racist or discriminatory.

You’re in the same boat as several other thousand Asian applicants with strong gpa/test scores, a musical instrument (most of the time violin or piano), and sport (99% of the time it’s tennis). While you are all qualified, schools look to build a diverse class. With nothing to stand out in your application, your chances at Wash U or (any other similar ranked school) is really a crap shoot.

I’m and Asian female, who plays violin, piano, and tennis  shocker I know. I have a very low gpa of 3.28, and a superscore SAT of 2090. And yet WashU accepted me today into artsci. Miracle? Probably. My brother was accepted into WashU with an even lower gpa. Don’t give up hope! You are def. a strong applicant. I’m jealous of your hard work :]

marcdvl- it’s okay, lol, I know that being Asian puts me at a disadvantage for top schools. I’m actually kind of flattered that you put me in the group with a strong GPA and test scores… but yeah, I wish I had something that stood out in my application.

irislikespandas- congrats on getting in! I’m so jealous of you, you don’t even know right now. Did you have some kind of a super special EC activity or something? And thank you! :)

Anyone else? :)

hey unflawless! I got in to WashU and I was also an asian female from a very competitive high school. I’m sort of similar to you. My gpa was lower than yours (B+ range…pretty low), but my SAT was higher (not by too much), my ECs were stronger (national/state/regional awards in 4 very different disciplines) and my teacher recommendations were definitely excellent (I represented my teachers in regional awards and stuff), though maybe around the same as your english teacher. I was also national merit commended and an AP Scholar.

So. Kind of like what marcdvl said (though he was kind of harsh): you need something to distinguish yourself. I would say you’re 60 (in)-40 or 50-50 for RD because of that, and also because this year’s RD will be the most competitive it’s ever been and you’re asian. I would of said maybe 75%+ for ED. But best wishes! That was really just me guesstimating, so take it with a grain of salt. You’re a great applicant regardless. I’m sure you’ll get into great schools with your impressive stats and out of class involvement!! Hope this helped. Where were you rejected?

Thanks; yeah, I regret not doing anything really impressive… it’s kind of too late to do that now unless I come up with something brilliant…

I was rejected from UPenn. Kind of expected, lol, but still depressing. Thank you for your reply :)
