Chance me *PLEASE*

Hello!

Please chance me for Industrial Engineering.

Please note:
I applied last year and got an extended waitlist offer from UMichigan-Ann Arbor. I lightly referred to that my main supplement essay (half a sentence), and I'm going to email my admissions counselor and introduce myself (and remind them of last year's offer). Should I email them later or is that (reference in my essay) enough? I don't want to be a nuisance!

My stats LAST year were horrendous (well, more than they are now :P!), 103/120 iBTOEFL, 570 Math, mid 500s reading and writing. I graduated this June (2011).

What's different this year:
1) Higher SAT scores
2) will be sponsored by the world's largest corporation(by assets and revenue). I'm doing a "Post-graduate year" kind of program with them (Have to pass the program to get the scholarship). I spoke a bit about the company's scholarship program in the additional information section (10,000+ applicants, only approximately 300 seats). I got a "High Honors"(highest) recognition for my performance in trimester one.

Gender:Male
State: International (very few applicants from my country, according to the lady who answered my many questions when I called the U-M admissions office)
TOEFL iBT: 114/120
Ethnicity: White (Middle Eastern), Asian, Black (Africa)
Highest Sitting SAT:1840 (610M, 600 R, 630WR)

Highschool GPA: 4.0/4.0 (Highschool doesnt rank)
Postgraduate Year Trimester I GPA: 3.61/4 (10th out of 300,highest GPA is a 3.89!)

APs:Taking AP Calculus AB, Physics C (+E&M Theory) with my scholarship program.
Highschool did not have APs.

SATII:
Taking Physics and Math Level 2 in January (hoping for a 670+)

ECs (Highschool):
-Founder and President of my school's Honor Society (Saudi Arabia's most competitive private school)
-Founder and President of my school's finance & stock trading club (2 years)
-"Helper" and Co-Founder, Homework Helpline (2 years)
-Finance contributor for my school's English magazine
-Treasurer of my school's Student Council (1 year)
-Youth Science Foundation Canada, School Representative & Regional Correspondent
-Hajj Clinic Volunteer (36 hours), volunteered with the clinic's logistics and operations management team
- 5 week investment banking internship (unpaid) with the largest investment bank in the middle east (1 reference provided in additional information sheet)
- 6 week investment banking internship (unpaid) with Saudi Arabia's largest bank (2 references provided in additional information sheet)

ECs(postgraduate year program):
- Vice President, Speech Club

Hooks: Scholarship ?

Teacher Rec Letters:
3 very good ones.

Counselor report:
1 SSR (online) from my scholarship program's advisor, 1 SSR (mailed) from my highschool counselor (very well written recommendation, atleast that's what he said).

Essays:
I showed them to 5 teachers (All of them are very experienced American teachers, 3 of them teach english in the scholarship program), my parents, 1 close friend at UMichigan-Ann Arbor, and they were all wowed by them. Deep, "from the heart" writing that I truly enjoyed.

Common App essay: Touched on a highly sensitive issue in my country and why it should be addressed (Under "Topic of your choice").

Thanks guys!

bump

Pretty please?

Hi CCers,

I’d really appreciate a quick opinion on this. The wait is extremely nerve-wracking.

Really, guys?

You’re an international applicant. These are typically difficult to chance.

However given your SAT score, I would say reach.

Keep in mind that I got waitlist offer with a 550 in math last year (Applied to engineering). Toefl was 103.

Math is 620 (as above) and toefl is 114. Now I have a major scholarship. Much MUCH better essays (I looked at my essay from last year and was disgusted at how bad it was).

still reach?

It’s very difficult to chance an international applicant. One of my children attends a rigorous East coast prep school. Over the past several years, the school’s average RD admitted SAT (2400) score was close to 2200 for UMich. The lowest admitted was around a 2000.

I may be incorrect, but UMich admissions seems to be a little bit more “numbers” driven than some other schools so one may have difficulty predicting the effect your SAT scores will play in this year’s admission. Each year’s applicant pool is different, but I’d still put this school in the reach for the stars and hope for the best category despite your determined improvement over the past year for standardized test scores and essays.
