Chance me please

Could anyone please chance me for the following colleges :-

HYP, Dartmouth, Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, Hamilton, Bates

Preferred major : History or Political Science or Philosophy

Career goals: Politics

Essay 1: How a deep family crisis since late 2010 shaped my political ideology, ambition and goals, why I feel that the present Indian socio economic structure needs to overhauled and how would a top liberal arts college in the US help me to develop into a dynamic political leader.

Common App Additional Information: Synopsis of my books and details of my awards. I also say that 2011 was a jinxed year and I underachieved in both my boards and SAT but I will definitely score a 2400 in three SAT subject test ( 1 in US history - a subject which I don't have much knowledge since it is not taught in Indian schools ) just to prove that the jinxed year is over and I am back to my very best.

Additional Essay ( Sent to all of the colleges through email ): A memorable trip to my ancestral village where I discovered that I belonged to the family of the first democratically elected leaders ( 11th century ) of modern Indian and the Naxal threat.

( Princeton essay - How as a child I was obsessed with Hitler due to same childhood circumstances but later understood how evil he was, Amherst essay - How I formed the student's union of my school after a hard fought battle, Williams essay - An excerpt from my diary describing the scene when I could see my broken ancestral house through the rikshaw and comparing with my own life situation )

Recommendations - All my three teachers would most probably speak about my intelligence, love for social sciences, political ambitions, nationalism and my brilliant leadership qualities and visionary mind which helped me to bring sweeping changes to the school's functioning and helped it to become a top class school.

Additionally My counselor has promised me to add a note why my board results slipped even though I was a class topper throughout my academic career.

Class IX - 90+, Class X - 87.5 ( A1s in all subject except french ) , Class XI - 90+, even 90+ in Class XII preboards ( I requested my counselor to send every single score including preboards with my transcripts so that the colleges know I was never a bad student. )

Class XII CBSE - 77 % ( Yet CBSE topper in English and among the top 3 scorers of my school in Maths )

ECs

President and founder of Student union of my school
President of student government
President and Founder of Youth Bank
President and founder of Eco Club
President and founder of school disciplinary committee
Founder of various extracurricular clubs for students
President, Founder, Speaker of Economics and Political club of my school
RWA President
Teacher of adult literacy campaign
Teacher ( Maths, Social Sciences and Painting ) for underprivileged kids
Chief Artist and group leader of our school's art club ( won many painting competitions )
A few more but Common App only allows 10 ....

My SAT Score very poor - 2030 ( Only 660 in Maths - a subject in which I never scored less than 95 :-( :-( ).

But the biggest problem is - My father's income is very very low and I would need a full ride. ( But the saving grace is that HYP, Dartmouth and Amherst are need blind, Williams and Middlebury are almost need blind and Bates and Hamilton are generous )

I was reading about the holistic process American Universities use to evaluate applicants .. And I felt I might have a bit of a chance in these extremely competitive schools.. What do you people feel as you really know the system.

Even US History books I am reading for the SAT subject tests speak how America is a nation where dreams can be fulfilled .. So I hope the Adcoms also put faith on my dreams.

Sorry it’s difficult to chance international students, and I really don’t have the experience since I’m in high school. It looks like you’re a freaking genius, but you’re coming off a bit cocky when you self describe your “brilliant leadership qualities” and excuse a “jinxed year” (saying you were unlucky? personal problems are different) Your application sounds amazing otherwise though! Good luck.

@wilsun007 - I am sorry if I have been a bit arrogant … I just wanted to explain the whole application

But I didn’t try to give any excuse through " Jinx " year only a confession that I underachieved but come 28th Jan … I’ll score a 2400 on SAT II to prove that I am back to my very best …

I do not like excuses !!!

One more thing … All these colleges say that they judge students according to the opportunities they have received.

My father’s annual income is just $2000 annually which they would find out through the fee waiver … so will they understand that I had to face many hurdles and challenges and never got too much opportunities.

To be honest, you’re probably going to get crushed by more academically qualified Indians. However, you seem to be different from all Indian applicants I know: you seem to be more than just academics. Moreover, you have a good “I-can-do-it” mentality, which is displayed through your active participation in school. Also, you clearly have a passion for politics, and if you’re to convey that drive to adcoms, you might just break through. I’m getting weird vibes from you. Still, as it stands, your numbers are seriously weak when compared to those of other Indian applicants (even those who are less privileged). Moreover, even if those schools are generous with financial aid, your needing it will hurt your chances–it’s just how it goes with international students.

@Cardgames - Thanks …

I hope " being different " helps me somewhat and I am just able to break through on the grounds that I have something different to offer than all other Indian candidates.

What has happened has happened … I can’t change the past year … I can only hope that my stellar SAT II scores improve my situation.

I can only hope for the best

Even my Princeton Alumni interviewer told me the same thing - even though my marks are very low according to other Indian candidates; He had never encountered a student from India who had similar goals like mine. He also said that since Princeton or other schools which I have applied to judge candidates holistically, and my academic record before this year has been stellar they might just be tempted to choose me. He joked that every college would like to have a future head of state in their alumni base. :-)

Also another alumni interview ( Duke ) remarked that even though my CBSE board marks were really low, the colleges would still see it in a positive light as even though I was a very passionate about the social sciences I had to study science due to the usual Indian family pressure but still I managed to decently score in a stream which was never my interest or my choice !!!

And lastly the crisis I was talking about :-

In oct 2010 my we had to leave our house and shift to our maternal grand mother’s house. My maternal uncle is a violent alcoholic who turned the house into a war zone. After a few months of constant violence I could not cope with the situation any longer and I ran away from the house in late Jan 2011. The next few weeks I spent my days in parks with the poor and homeless in the shivering Delhi winter. ( My common app essay talks about this experience - spending time with the city’s poorest helped me to understand how helpless they were, how the government only cared for the rich, why the whole plutocratic socio economic structure had to be wiped out and how much these people, who still comprise almost half of our nation, need a good leader and administrator ).

By the time I decided to return home just before my boards I was shocked and depressed after seeing those suffering people and almost half dead due to the chilling winter. So how could I have scored a 95% just two days later; I did recover. I scored 95 and 91 in my last two exams !!!

Holistical review should take into account everything - the situation, the circumstances and the score. And if this is not the case then I wasted my time applying to these colleges.

Education at a top university would help me immensely in my endeavour but that doesn’t mean that if I don’t get into these colleges I won’t be able to reach my goal.

I searched the books and the first link was this chance thread lol. Are they published?

Can someone chance me for Berea College please …

Can someone chance me for Berea College P-L-E-A-S-E.

And my preferred list of colleges too … PLEASE

And yes Kent State University and University of Cincinnati also.

I am getting nervous. Please help me.

It’s very difficult to chance you, Anirudha, because you are a non-typical international applicant. Even ‘typical’ internationals are hard to evaluate, but at least the cc forum has some experience with internationals from India. Someone with your background is unusual so that’s why you aren’t getting a lot of feedback. Try posting on the International Forum here for Indian students and see what they can tell you.

@Anirudha1993 no offense, but your life seems made up. For one, it’s impossible that your dad only make $2000 a year when the SAT registration costs nearly $100 and SAT subject test registration costs around $20.

And I don’t know if you’re flat out lying in your essay, or just exaggerating a lot, because that situation seems improbable. How could you keep your grades/activities or even go to school for that matter with a “war zone” going on in your house and spending “weeks in the shivering cold”…? Like really?

Not trying to hate, but admissions officers will most definitely see through your lies.

@GenCross - The admission officers will have my father’s bank statement, salary certificate, fee waiver request from school counsellor and the letters of recommendation. So I don’t think there is any question of lying at all. The admission officers have enough data about a student to catch lies.

Most people in India have same kind of problems as I have so we have learnt to adjust with our circumstances. Btw I did not keep up with my grades, my final grades are almost down by 20%.
