So thoughts?

Thank you

You have a really good chance at all of these schools. However, schools like that are all very hard to get into, so it might be good to add one or two safeties to your list. Another option is to apply to one of those schools EA, and then add some safeties if you don’t get in. All in all I think you’re definitely a competitive applicant. The only thing I might suggest is to maybe find one other EC (only if you have the time) like a part time job, drama/stage crew, even trying a sport. Other than volunteering (and perhaps MUN) it might seem like you spend most of your time studying.

Thanks Deke,

I forgot to mention that ive played rec league basketball since 3rd grade and i plan to be a volunteer coach starting next fall and then the rest of high school

bump…

I would only consider the free, competitive summer schools. Harvard SSP is not a boost, they would rather see you have a simple job. Try TASP or RSI.

Take an EC beyond the classroom. Right now this is your big weakness for top schools, they want something beyond pres of school club. Try the national math and science competitions.

Thanks Waverly,

would MUN conferences count as national competitions? Every conference that I’ve been to has had people from all over the country and some of them had people from all around the world

We are so similar cause I’m apart of all those clubs, volunteer at hospitals, am going to the summer institute, and taking a lot of APs! Except one thing you might want to do is a sport to show balance…and Brown is extremely hard to get into cause my friend, who was valedictorian and had a 5.3 GPA and got a full ride to MIT, didn’t get accepted there…

In my opinion you are a very competitive applicant. Your AP’s are outstanding, wish my school offered that many. Your EC’s also reflect your goals in life as well. If I did have to pitch an idea to you it would be, to start one or two clubs and be the president of them. Leadership is very big on a college application, especially the schools you are applying to. Keep up the good work! I’m sure you can get into some of those schools.

Lastly, how did you like AP Stat? I am taking it next year and i’m kind of nervous about it. Even though math is one of my best subjects.

Thanks Julie and nate,

Julie: I forgot to mention that I have played rec league basketball since 4th grade and hope start coaching younger kids this fall

nate: stat for me is incredibly easy, but it might just be my school. The majority of it is memorizing formulas and learning how to use them

bump 10 char

No, nothing in MUN will impress at that level school, well maybe UVA. But you are affluent and from a way overrepresented state. These schools will have hundreds/ thousands who look just like you from the mid Atlantic. They have a ton of legacies and recruited athletes who will get many of the seats for your pool. You need to really differentiate yourself. Your bar is extremely high.

If you were from a poor family in Arkansas and drove 150 mile daily to a CC to get your courses, MUN would be just fine.

@Waverly

how do you think I could differentiate myself?

bump 10char

Do something that puts you on a national scale. I recommend researching one of the olympiads and just beasting up on them (study like $@$% over the summer; 2-4 hours per day). Colleges generally usually value them in this order:

USAMO (math)
USAPhO (physics)
USNCO (chem)
USACO (computing/programming)
USABO (bio)
NACLO (computational linguistics)

Trust me, a lot of time spent over the summer is something you won’t regret when you apply to colleges. Good luck!

That’s the age old question Tommy. By definition differentiating yourself means doing things few others do. Think outside of the box of typical activities high school students do. Get your activities outside of school. Do something meaningful in the community. Pursue a unique passion. Make a real impact somewhere. Contribute in a meaningful way.
