Hey guys kinda late I know just getting a bit tense now that UC decisions should be coming out soon. Let me know what you guys think. Thank you in advance and good luck to everyone!

Background information: I graduated high school in 2005 (yes I am old) and went to Sac State but did not like it there. I transferred to a community college, several in fact, and just could not get it together academically. I had family/personal issues (some my fault) and I eventually had no place to live for a while. These circumstances made my GPA suffer with many Ws, Ds, and Fs at several CCC. These grades are at least 3 years old but I still included these in my applications and was honest about everything. I enlisted in the military in 2007 but only served 2 years (discharged for medical reasons) and here I am awaiting decisions.

GPA: 3.15 (this is my gpa at a new community college), not that high I know :/

Schools Applied: Everywhere except for Berkeley. I want to go to Davis but anywhere is ok

Major: Biology

Experience: Volunteer work at nursing home, volunteered for AIDS walk 2011, Military Service, work full time

IGETC: Will be complete by spring

Prereqs: Here is where it gets tricky. For UC Davis I will have every prereq done EXCEPT for Organic Chemistry. For other UCs im not sure if they will take my physics because I completed the non calculus based series. I have all Gen Chem/Bio/Math completed.

Thanks again guys!

is your overall GPA 3.15, or is that just your GPA at your latest CCC? because overall GPA (including sac state and other CCCs) is what matters

thats my gpa at my current CCC

What do you believe your OVERALL GPA is? That is really what is relevant to chances.

For the Ds and Fs from previous community colleges, did you applied for academic renewal or repeated the them at later time for better grades? Because if you did, you overall GPA probably will stay at 3.15. If you did not do either options, you will have to include those grades into your current community college’s GPA. It is hard to chance you without knowing the above information.

Hmm your situation’s kind of tricky. As someone pointed out what matters is your cumulative GPA, which factors your grades from every CC and any four year university you’ve attended. So if you have a significant number of Ds and Fs from previous semesters at other institutions it’s going to pull down your 3.15 if you haven’t done academic renewal. I’d have to say, for a Biology major without TAG, 3.15 is somewhat low for Davis. Generally the admitted average tends to be in the 3.4-3.5 range for the middle-tier UCs. You can create a custom table of previous admissions stats here [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/) for up to 2009.

Your situation is really unique though because you’re a veteran. I think if you have a powerful personal statement that explains your situation convincingly, then you might have an outside chance at some of the UCs that do holistic reviews (UCI, UCLA, UCB), despite a 3.15 GPA.

As far as the pre-reqs, most of the UCs only want the calculus based physics courses and the algebra-based courses will transfer over for unit credit, but won’t fill the physics requirements. You should be be fine without Ochem at everywhere except Berkeley and UCLA.

I retook them. After looking my grades I don’t what I was thinking back then. For example i took gen psych and passed it at another school the retook it at another and failed it. Really depressing but what can I do. I reported all of my grades regardless of how bad they were so I don’t know what’s going to happen :(

If you retook what the UCs believe are equivalent courses (check Assist.org to compare UC transferrable courses from each CC), then your GPA should be ok. UCs have what’s called academic forgiveness so any Ds or Fs you’ve gotten won’t count against your GPA if you take the exact same course again and get a passing grade. However, it gets a bit tricky when you’re comparing courses from different CCs because the curriculum can vary. Sometimes they’re deemed equivalent and only the passing grade is counted into their calculated GPA and sometimes they don’t believe them to be and both grades get counted. If both courses satisfy the same pre-req on Assist.org, then the passing grade will be taken. If they either aren’t listed then it’s up to an admissions officer to make that determination when going over your application.

Thank you Dila for your input!

Hey Md,
Since you took the same psych courses and aced the first one but failed the other one, UCs only take your first attempt.

so pretty much have no chance with UCs that do not do a holistic review?

Are you sure your gpa is a 3.15? Check with a counselor. It might be higher.
