Any other suggestions?

Add - Rutgers, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, UMass (amherst), Iowa State, Penn State, Univ of Illinois (Urbana - Cham), Univ of Delaware, Univ of Maryland - college park

(Some of them could be low reach/reach…depends on your SAT score/class rank). You could try retaking the physics or add on Chem.

UCSB has a good astronomy program , but could be reach with your GPA.

here is the grad school rankings http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-science-schools/physics-rankings usually a good indicator of undergrad quality.

Texas A&M
WPI
^add these to your list, really nice universities.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I also need financial aid, which i forgot to mention. I can afford only 15-20K a year.

You will get need based aid (federal grants available for US citizens/perm residents). You can post in the financial aid board. I dont have the specifics but some of these are low cost loans…I believe and partly grants/work study etc.

[Student Aid on the Web](http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp)

Federal Student Aid Programs
We offer the following types of aid to help you pay for your education after high school.

Grants—student aid funds that do not have to be repaid (other conditions apply).
Work-Study—a part-time work program to earn money while you are in school.
Federal Loans—student aid funds that you must repay with interest.
Types of federal student loans:
Perkins
Direct Stafford
Direct PLUS (graduate and professional degree student borrowers)
Direct PLUS (parent borrowers)
Direct Loan Consolidation

Supposing I apply for financial aid, would I still have a good shot at these?

Are you a US citizen? If so you are eligible for need based FA!

Yeah, I am. But how much will I get from there? I don’t know how Aid and everything works.

My parents will be able to afford anywhere from 15-20k a year. the rest 20-30k i need to get through aids.

Is this site reliable and accurate?

[Drexel University profile - SAT Scores and Admissions Data for Drexel University](Drexel University: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA)

Thanks Mrinal. So can you tell me how much of a chance I have to the list of colleges I listed in a few posts above? And I will apply for aid. I am a US Citizen.

You should remember that you won’t get too mch aid from the state universities, as you’ll be OOS. You should apply to RPI,and Rochester Institute of Technology. Good private Uni’s which’ll give decent aid.( RIT’ll give good merit aid too!)

Well, according to the site i mentioned above,

School Name City % Adm / % Aid Fees
Drexel Philadelphia, PA 58 / 99 $54,040
Syracuse Syracuse, NY 49 / 79 $53,790

Penn State University Park, PA 52 / 70 $41,548

UIUC Aid is mostly in loans, from what I gather.

Well if you go to the link I mentioned like 5 posts above, it shows how much percent of aid is grants and how much is loans.

UIUC Financial Aid (2008 - 09):

Percentage of Students Receiving Aid: 68%
University of Illinois Scholarships (■■■■■■■■■■)
Percentage of Students Receiving Types of Aid
Grants: 44%
Loans: 43%
Average Amount of Aid
Grants: $9,706
Loans: $6,356

@anvesh - Noone can predict how much grant/loan the financial aid office offers. You seem to be stuck on this. Apply to a broad range of colleges, private, public. The list we have given you is a good start.

For now, focus on getting a great SAT score, apply to colleges, and sit back and compare the aid packages when acceptances start coming in. FA is really unpredictable and it is a case by case basis.

And yes, your admission to your list of colleges (post #6…good list) will be need-blind since you are a US citizen…as most of the US folks themselves (people like me
) cannot afford 55k/year …!!

Anvesh that is mainly for the instate people, OOS Rarely get grants, mainly those students who are Ivy quality.

Mind you, some liberal arts colleges have good physics and astrophysics programs.

^federal grants are available to everyone (it is not a whole lot …maybe 2k-3k/year).
Again fin aid is a combination of grants, loans, work study. Look at the costs of all the public colleges and apply to the ones with low costs, and some private. Someone in this board also got merit aid for clark, grinnel, wpi. Again, your SAT score and grades need to be up there to qualify for as much merit aid as possible.

Do you have any family here? Are your parents wanting to move back to the US?

Thanks guys.

@fall2016parent: yeah, we can’t afford that either. mainly because my sister gets into undergrad the year i get out of it. :)

@pratyush: okay. i didn’t know that. i thought grants were usually based on merit and need based, not in or out state, thanks for the clarification. really? can u name some, please?

I’d recommend contacting perfectpixie on that topic anvesh. I believe she applied as a Physics major to a number of LACs.
