Thanks for the help!!!! Oh, and I am planning on applying Early Decision

If you do indeed apply ED, i’d say you have a very good shot.

You have really nice ECs and a great SAT score, but that GPA is well below average for admitted students. Honestly, I’d say it’s not likely, even ED.

What is your GPA in context of your school? And this year?

I think admissions would take into account the possibility that your school may be extremely competitive, because they certainly don’t consider all high schools as equal. As patriots said, your ECs and SATs are both pretty spectacular but I noticed that you’ll only have 2 AP exams taken when you apply this fall. I don’t know if it’ll exactly hurt you, but it’s below what an average Duke applicant would have.

Why do you think you would like Duke? You are obviously from the North (like VT, NH or ME). SKI Team Class S State Champions? “third in Entire State?” Is that behind Bode Miller? Are you expecting to watch skiing on television in North Carolina? It almost looks like you’re at a New England prep school like St. Paul’s or Exeter with low grades and high test scores. However, your EC’s of “President and Founder of Hiking Club, President and founder of creative writing club” indicate you are not at any prep school.

You had a 3.47 GPA your 1st year and a 3.67 GPA your 2nd. The question is can you maintain an upward tend. Boys will be boys at age 14 or 15. What are or what will be your 11th and 12th grade GPA’s? This is critical. With your SAT’s and a solid upward GPA trend, you can go anywhere. Plus, you have a classic old-school college prep curriculum with both Latin and Spanish. You certainly don’t need to take Greek next year as third language, unless you are thinking of studying classics.

WARNING: DO NOT APPLY TO DUKE ED!!! If you get in, you cannot go elsewhere. If you want to escape some $#!+ New England small town, there are many options available to you. Even at Dartmouth, the majority of the students are from other parts of the country.

CHANCE: 50% + that you will transfer from Duke (if you are admitted)

^Lol you mad? I think he realizes there are less ski resorts in NC than in NH. And arbitrarily pulling out a number for the likelihood of transfer without even knowing the kid?

^LOL “less ski resorts”. Shouldn’t that be fewer? Like zero. The OP is an Eagle Scout, runs CC and sometimes track (likely distance events), enjoys hiking and rowed crew for 2 years. He’s a fish out of water in the South. Sorry “Shaq”; not everyone loves B-ball.

[Let me google that for you](<a href=“LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You”>LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

Thanks for that guys. And lol, I do realize that I’ll have to cut back on skiing down in the South. I want to go to Duke mainly for the work-hard, play hard atmosphere. I want to go to a school with prestige, but one where I can also have fun as well. Greek is a plus. As for my high school, it is pretty competitive, where we send a decent number of kids to the Ivies each year(3 kids going to Yale this year, numerous others to Dartmouth, Princeton, MIT, UChicago etc)) It is a public school, so no, I do not go toa private prep school. My GPA for Junior year is around a 3.6. Yes, i wasn’t really focused freshman year, and it shows. I’m also planning on writing a book this summer. I would appreciate any other input anyone on CC can give me. Thanks!

GPA is kind of holding you back, but I like your ECs, so who knows. ED would make you competitive in my opinion (GPA will still probably hurt you a bit, but they take other stuff into account and if you look at past results, kids with 3.6s and high scores have gotten in, its hard, but do-able)

I think you’ll get deferred on ED because of grades. As I stated above, they’ll want to see an upward trend in GPA by year. Without 1st term senior year grades, there will not be enough evidence of 3.6+ work. So they’ll defer just to get your senior year grades because of the 3.47 at the beginning.

Secondly, be very careful about ED anywhere. If you don’t visit several places before you apply, ED can be a hugh mistake. A “work-hard, play hard atmosphere” sure doesn’t exist at most of the top places students at your school attend except Dartmouth. Duke is a big pre-med destination. “Greek is a plus?” I rest my case.

Duke Vandy and Dartmouth are the three biggest examples of work hard play hard. Maybe UMich, Wake, BC, etc but the academics are probably slightly less esteemed (still top notch though)
