Chance Me Please

I'm currently a rising senior at one of the top high schools in Texas. I am 17 and of the Indian ethnicity. My top choices are UT Austin, U of Michigan, Emory, and UVA. My major would be preferably buisness

My Info:

ACT: 32

SAT: 2050

GPA: 3.5 UW - 4.3 W

Courseload: Taken 8 AP classes so far, planning on taking 5 more next year.

SAT II: Math II 660 - US History 630 - English Lit - 600 (Taking these three again, will
probably be much higher)

Class Rank - my school does not rank outside of the top 10% but I would say I am safely in the top 25%

Extra Curricular:

Currently Interning at the District Attorney's office with the D.A. This hopefully will be a large hook mainly because of my interest in criminal law which eventually would be my interest in Law School. I deal with multiple criminal cases there and receive large amounts of experience there.

3 Year Varsity Lacrosse - Lettered 3 Years

Eagle Scout

N.H.S

Model U.N

Debate

Over 50 hours volunteering at community library

Rec Letters - Planning on getting them from my AP Comparative Governement teacher and my AP Physics B teacher. Also will get one from my counselor but this is a little tricky because she is retiring this summer so she is not writing letters...so I'll just get to know my new counselor as soon as possible

Please let me know! Thanks!

Your SAT score is near the 25th percentile for accepted students (2020), your GPA is below the 25th percentile (3.78), your class rank is also on the low side, your ECs seem average, but you do have a reasonably rigorous courseload. I’d say you have an average shot of getting in if you apply ED I or II and show interest in Emory (such as by visiting, essays, attending regional sessions) but for RD Emory would be a reach for you at this point.

I recalculated my GPA and they are a 3.7 UW and a 4.4 W. I’m not sure how much that changes things. Also I would submit my ACT score of 32 not my 2050 SAT. That would help right?

In that case I think you have a reasonably good chance of getting if you do ED and show interest; there’s a big difference between a 3.5 and 3.7 even if both are still below the 25th percentile (Emory doesn’t really look at your weighted GPA), and if you don’t report your SAT Reasoning scores also don’t report your SAT subjects (usually need at least a 720+ on those to help your app). The middle 50 percentile for accepted ACT scores is 30-33 so you’re on the higher end of that.

Thanks for the information! If you know, why is it that Emory (and a lot of schools) don’t look at your weighted average? Shouldn’t that say more about you than an un-weighted average?

Because weighted average is calculated differently at each high school.

Unweighted GPA is universal.

My high school didn’t have weighted GPA. At my high school I was definitely a top 3 student. But my GPA put my class rank at 35 or something (behind the people with two gym classes and music in a semester). So looking at everyone’s unweighted GPA would compare someone like you to someone like me.

Alright that makes sense. Also if I wanted to be a part of the business school would I apply to Oxford or the main Emory campus?

Either one works, as you can transfer to the b-school from either main campus or Oxford after you have completed the prereqs with a decent GPA. You can’t apply directly to the b-school from high school.

Ok thanks! And if that’s the case, what’s the main differences between Oxford and the main campus and also pros/cons of each?
