Chance me please !!

Whitman is one of my top choices. I visited it and absolutely loved it. I plan on applying RD because I am torn between Whitman and Colorado College. I plan on being a Studio Art major. I'm a white female and I'm from a small town in California. I'm dyslexic. I understand that my stats are low, but I have gone from taking all special ed classes to all AP classes in 4 years, so I hope that admissions takes all of the adversity that I have overcome into consideration.
I had a pretty good interview with the associate director of admissions.

uw GPA: 3.5 (I don't know my weighted because my school doesnt weight gpas)
I go to a school with rigorous cirriculum and my school is ranked in the top 100 public schools by us news and world report

SAT: cr: 580, m: 670, w: 630
us hist: 610, math level 2: 600 (I did not study for these at all because of ap exams. I plan on retaking them this october in addition to taking the sat bio)

APs:
Junior: AP English Composition, AP US History
Senior: AP English Lit, AP Gov, AP Environmental Science, AP Calc BC

ECs:
I take oil painting classes (9,10,11,12)
I am a volunteer teacher at a a local art studio that provides art classes and oil painting classes for children in my community (11, 12)
I am on the BP fashion board at Nordstrom, which is an internship program where we put on fashion shows, promote nordstrom events, and have the opportunity to attend buyer meetings and seminars
I have a part-time job at Nordstrom
I am in the art club at my school
I am in a club at my school that organizes dances, prom, rallies, spirit days, and other school events (11, 12)
I am on the school volleyball team and play club volleyball, but I wont play club this year because the club teams for 18 year olds are way too competitive (10,11,12)

Awards:
I won student of the month in junior year
One of my oil paintings won first place in an art society competition in my local area

Mollylove, I’m not sure your stats would get you into CC even if you applied ED there. You do stand a better chance at Whitman only because they don’t get as many applicants as CC these days (CC had a popularity surge about 6 years ago and it’s now a lot more selective than it used to be). If you don’t need financial aid that will help, but as you know, being a white female is tough in college admissions! I think you will have an uphill battle getting into Whitman regular admissions; at the same time, it’s true that it’s not wise to apply ED unless it’s your very top choice. Good luck!

Hi Mollylove, kolijma is right about your stats, your GPA and cr/w SAT scores are below the median for Whitman, however, you do have mitigating factors in you profile: the successful battle you launched to get from Special ED to APs (congratulations!); the long term commitment to art; and attending a top public high school are all things that will slant in your favor. The truth is that we don’t know how admissions will view your application, but I think you should apply. In the mean time, you could take the SAT one more time, scores often improve the second time around, and also try the ACT which some students prefer. Best of luck, and you might take a look Loren Pope’s book, “Colleges That Change Lives”. Thought provoking introductions to colleges you’ve probably never thought about.
