Chance me please?

Would appreciate it if a couple people could chance me for 2013 freshman admissions.

Grade: Senior
Out of State
GPA: 3.45 unweighted
SAT:
Superscored: CR-760, M-780, W-650, Total: 2190
Highest Single Test: CR-730, M-780, W-650, Total: 2160
SAT2s: (do they even take these?)
Math 2: 800
Physics: 660 (retaking in Dec, expecting 750-800)
World History: 650 (retaking in Dec, expecting 700-800)
ACT: 30 (not sure if I should submit this)

Classes:
IB Diploma Student, every class I took this year and last year were IB classes.
Current Class load: IB Math HL, IB History of the Americas HL, IB English 7-8 HL, IB Anthropology 1-2 SL, IB Mandarin 9-10 SL, IB ToK Core, and IB Physics HL

So far tested Mandarin SL and got a 6 (not sure if they care about this either)
Plan on taking all the other tests this year, expecting to get a diploma

Volunteer: Library volunteer for a long time, fresh-junior
senior year volunteering at a homeless shelter for families

sports: i did a bit of crew and do muay thai, but no varsity or awards or anything

Music: Piano and Guitar for a combined 15 years

clubs:
president of Asian Club and Music Club, treasurer of math club, members of statistics, robotics, MUN, and was in Interact for a while

Other stuff: I'm into art, and got 3rd in state for a competition (not sure if this helps at all but might as well include it in app)

My main concern is that my GPA is pretty low, my other stats seem fine but when I compare my GPA with some other people who got in, it kinda scares me.

Also, my senior year is really tough (calc HL is destroying me), I know that UW doesn't require your transcript until after you've accepted their admissions offer, but how likely is it for them to rescind the admissions offer due to low grades. (how low would they have to be?)

Thanks for any help!

with an average personal statement, I would give you a 60-70% chance, which is no guarantee. **** can happen, so good luck on your personal statement.

With a bellow average personal statement, I would give you closer to a 50% chance.

–
And when it comes down to test scores, UW’s philosophy is that they are all important, but not that important.
For example they looked at my math placement test score from another college which seems completely trivial to me.

OK, I’m not an expert in what goes through the admission committee’s mind, but I’ve personally heard of cases last year where the 4.0+ supposed shoe-ins got rejections from the UW while middling 3.somethings got in, to everyone’s shock. That said, we reached the conclusion that the 3.x’s had some sort of leadership extracurriculars that could have given them a leg up over the high GPA achievers. Another co-factor could have been high standardized test scores of the 3.x’s. (Your SAT stats put you in a better light than your ACT so I’d stick with those.)

Your middling (but unweighted) GPA should not keep you from applying. UW has seen a boom in in-state applicants since the economy started dipping a few years back. Given that you’d be out of state and would be expected to be a full-pay student (at least to the extent that the state will not have to subsidize your tuition), you might have a hook right there.

my x roommate got into UW with a 1.7 highschool gpa while not meeting the minimum highschool educational reqs.

His story is complicated lol… He is probably one of the lowest gpa’s to ever be admitted though…

I say this a lot on here.
in terms of weight from highschool applicants, I suspect UW weights these areas accordingly,
GPA: - 20%
SAT/ACT: - 15%
Extra circulars : - 5%
other standardized tests such as AP: - 5%

Personal statement and essay portions: - 55%

Here comes the left side of my brain.
In order to calculate your chance to get into UW, take the average GPA that gets into UW, and if thats yours, give yourself 50% of this area.
So if the average GPA admitted is a 3.45, you have a (50% x 20%) chance of getting in for this area.
Then look at the average SAT score that gets in. Multiply your stuff accordingly.

The other areas after these are really hard to gauge. Basically if you passed AP tests, or IB, or took SAT subject tests, give yourself all the 5%.

If you did 4 years worth of Extra circulars, give yourself again the entire 5%.

Then have someone critically grade your personal statement, (many highschool senior english teachers in washington state are required by their job description to do this for you).

add up all your remaining percents and you have your chance of getting in, and chill. I would give that value a + or - 10% confidence interval.

Hmm I guess I could write a program that does this all and post it on here…

Veveneathnea, if you are just above average for GPA, and about 110 points above average for the SAT, would good percents be 52% and 60%? And what about the In-State Out-of-State factor? Thanks for all your advice over the past couple of weeks :).

another question i have is what percent would you say puts you in good range to be admitted?

Thanks for all the replies everyone

@veve, I’ve shown one of my essays (the one about a personal experience that holds some sort of importance) to two English teachers and both of them liked it alot. I’m still working on the other one about how your culture affects you. (hard for me to do, since I’m first generation asian but I don’t want to write the cliched essay that every asian writes. I would appreciate if any of you could share any tips for this one)

@Vot
I’m definitely applying. I visited the campus over the summer and loved it. Love Seattle as well. I’ve read more people are being accepted out of state, but the acceptance rate has stayed the same since the amount of people applying is increasing as well. With the money problems alot of univs face these days, I’m sure they would love to get some more delicious out of state money lol

@UDUB

I think the % thing was more of a guideline about comparing yourself to people who have gotten in the past, and less of a your definite chances. I’d think that once your past a certain point with grades, your chances of getting in probably depend mostly on your personal statement. Especially since UW is known for putting alot of weight on their personal statement.

any one else?

2 months later bump

oh, and new SAT II scores are:
Physics: 710
World History: 750

if that helps at all

SAT II’s and SAT I look VERY STRONG. Although your GPA is comparatively low, I still think you have a good chance of being admitted come March. If I had to pinpoint a percentage chance it would be 70-75%. Good Luck!

95% you’re getting in. UW loves IB. The only thing that worries me is Washington made a new law requiring to accept a percentage from WASHINGTON. Since your’e out of state, that worries me.

that law was last year and i don’t think it hurt OOS that much.

Awesome, thanks for posting guys

Hopefully I’ll get in :D

hi, im currently at a competitive 4 year university(university of Puget Sound) and was looking to transfer to University of Washington. im a freshman in my second semester and really want to transfer to uw. Im went to Puget sound because i was recruited to play basketball but realize uw is my true home. first semester i finished with a 2.67 while playing a college sport. my high school gpa was a 3.665 but my junior and senior year semesters were the best being 3.66 , 3.57, 3.87, and finally 3.74. does anyone want to chance me on my likely hood of getting in. I think have a very well written essay, have over 16 family members attend uw and my grandpa was a professor there.

100%
This is a guaranteed entrance.
Don’t worry about the gpa too much because you are taking all IB courses.
A student doing that well in IB is better than a student getting a 4.0 in normal classes.
You have a ton of extracurricular activities, volunteering, and you are Asian (diversity is a big deal to colleges).
Trust me, I know a few people that go to school their.
You can easily get in.
I had a 2.89 with the worst possible classes, a 19 on my ACT, no clubs, 8 volunteering hours, no extracurricular activities, and I got into every school I applied to (The highest ranking school was #28 on the US News Top Public College List. UW is #13).
I mainly got in because I only applied to out-of-state schools (I didn’t go because the oos costs were $30,000 after my $15,000 scholarship).
Universities love out-of-state student because they charge them the most money.
Still apply to other school though.
Even though I think you will get in without a doubt, you don’t want to be that one guy that has no backup plan.
