I applied regular decision to Fordham, and I would like to know what my chances are.

GPA: 3.5 unweighted
SAT: 1800 CR:640 M:570 W:590
ACT: 26

ECs: Most of them are school-based, with the exception of Youth Ministry.

APs: None, unfortunately.

My course load is fairly heavy this year. I am taking two college courses, which are Spanish and College Writing. I am also taking two math courses as well. Also, just to note, I am taking Physics, which in my school, an 88 average in Chemistry is required to be able to take Physics.

So, do I have a chance, or no?

Based on what you’ve posted, you have a shot at getting in, but your chances are not especially high. Though I can’t make a complete judgement for you until I know a few more things; first, what’s your major? Since you have a fairly strong critical reading score, you are more likely to be accepted if you are majoring in English or doing pre-law or something similar. Second, what’s your rank, if you have one? Your GPA is meaningless without something to compare it to. Third, what are your ECs, specifically? If they are good enough they can make up for weaker parts of your application. Fourth, are you not taking any AP classes because your school does not offer any, or are you just not taking them?

1) I am doing pre-law.

2) My school does not rank the students. Unfortunately, I am unable to give you an estimate of what my placement is.

3) ECs:
Library Club (It’s volunteering in the school library once a cycle)
Video Club (We create and broadcast the school morning news)
Sports Night (It’s the main school event that requires long hours to practice)
Forensics Club (I was Treasurer last year)
I have collected donations for the Lymphoma Society.
I joined the Youth Group. There, I have done a few volunteering venues, such as helping with the local food drive, going to the soup kitchen, and helping decorate the homes of the less fortunate for Christmas.

4) I do not have any APs because I did not meet the average requirement, which is 90 for all subjects that offer AP courses. The same average is required for the two college courses that I am taking.

I wrote my essay on the importance of organ donation and how to promote it, connecting it to the fact that I am the recipient of an organ.

Also, I forgot to put this in the last post, but does it hurt my chances if I did not take pre-calc? (Not my choice, by the way)

Fordham doesn’t admit by major. Your chances of being accepted into any major are the same. Except for SAT math, your SATs and ACTs are above the lower quartile scores, so you have a decent shot with a strong essay and strong recs.

Technically, there’s never “no chance” a thing will happen…and your chances of being accepted are well above zero! If you can afford Fordham without scholarships, it’s worth the fee to apply :D

Thanks, sometimes when I look at other people’s statistics, I feel like there is no chance. My recs should be strong, since they are from my science, English, and math teachers. I am also putting into consideration the fact that my older sibling who had much lower SAT scores than me got wait-listed for Fordham.

At the Fordham information session I was told that they DO admit by major, or at least by school.

I think I understand where the confusion is coming from. Since Fordham has two campuses, they have split where some of the majors are placed. When I checked the Lincoln Center campus, it the recommended campus for the art and theater majors. The Rose Hill campus is recommended for those who are majoring in subjects like Chemistry or Biology.

Theater and dance students must audition to be accepted to the major. They can elect to be considered for admission to Fordham if they don’t make it into the theater major (some do.) My daughter auditioned for two majors (acting and playwriting.) When she received her acceptance letter, it specifically mentioned that she was accepted to Fordham and to both majors. To do apply for the theater majros, she needed to apply first to the university, and to request an audition for each major, and send in a writing sample for the playwriting major.

Well that’s strange, haha. They told me that people applying to Gabelli would need higher math scores. Go figure.

Colleges and their tendency to cause confusion.

Well I’ve gotten a bit off topic. They won’t hold it against you for not taking pre-calc if it’s not your fault. Just have your guidance counselor write in his or her recommendation letter that it was not at your discretion. I would also take it in the summer, and have your counselor mention that.

Yeah, my school uses the Regents for placement, and I missed it by two points last year to take Alg 2/Trig, so now I can’t take pre-calc this year. I tired to switch to the normal class last year, but there was a scheduling conflict. I’ll see if I can take it over the summer.
