Chance me please!

White male from NY

SAT: 1120/1600, 1800/2400
Reading-520
Math-600
Writing-680

GPA: 92 (my school doesn’t do it on a 4-point scale)

Tons of ECs, service hours, and leadership positions, and solid letters of recommendation.

Throughout high school, I’ve only taken one AP (Spanish) and four honors classes (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Spanish III), but I go to a good high school with a very good reputation, that is very well-known.

Additional:
National Honor Society
Spanish National Honor Society
Dean’s Award
Honor Roll

Did you apply? If so, I think you’ll be accepted.

Yes, I did. Thanks.

When did you apply?

Have your test scores and transcripts been sent?

I think you will be accepted.

If you go to UA, be sure to take the Spanish CLEP test (at your expense and location) in order to get up to 14 credits of FL. Having taken AP Spanish, I expect you would do well. You can take the test whenever you like, but while info is fresh in your head is best.

Does Alabama not give credit from language AP tests? My son is taking AP Latin this year and thought that would take care of the language requirement- not true at Bama?

Alabama grants credit for AP exams, but is more generous with credit for foreign language CLEP exams, which are arguably less difficult and certainly less stressful than AP exams as scores are made available right after the computer-based test, which can be taken throughout the year at testing centers, many of which are located on military bases as the exams are very popular with members of the military. There is currently no CLEP exam for Latin.

Here is a link to the complete list of credits earned by examination at UA: [Credit by Examination < The University of Alabama](http://courseleaf.ua.edu/introduction/academicpolicies/creditbyexamination/)
There has been much discussion in other threads about AP and CLEP credits, so if you have questions, poke around, or you can ask us again.

There’s a language requirement? What is it?

[Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Alabama](http://gobama.ua.edu/steps/freshmanreq.html)

Many majors have a foreign language requirement that can be met by AP credits or CLEP. The link posted above lists high school requirements for admission.

There’s a language requirement? What is it?

The College of Eng’g does not have a FL req’t since it has a C requirement. The CoE also does not require a Fine Arts class or a Literature class…those are optional.

YES…Bama gives credit for AP and CLEP tests…

@mom2collegekids: I applied about two and a half weeks ago and already sent my SAT scores. My school was supposed to send the transcript so I’m assuming they’ve done so by now. Letters of recommendation have already been mailed out to them.

@aeromom: I will consider taking that exam, thanks for the heads up. I could also take a CLEP exam for Greek, but I searched online and don’t think that they offer it although I could be wrong. I oinly found info for CLEP for Spanish, French, and German.

@Andrew
Welcome to Bama! you are correct about the CLEP only being for Spanish, French and German…the link below shows all CLEP exams which are offered…33 exams in 5 different subject areas (with World Lang being one area)…

The Business school does not require you take (get credit for) foreign language as the “language” requirement may be completed by computer courses as well

Andrew…since you’re in the honors Spanish Club, does that mean that you probably could get some Spanish credits if you took the CLEP for Spanish? The CLEP tests are easier than the AP tests.

Honestly, I’m not sure but I will try to find out. Thanks for your help.

According to my myBama, I got in
It doesn’t say anything about scholarship money though, so I guess I didn’t get any which means I probably won’t enroll since ~35,000 wouldn’t be worth it when I can go to a SUNY school for ~15,000 and be close to home.

Unless they don’t let us know about scholarships yet, even though I doubt I got much anyways…

congrats on your acceptance.

Scholarships aren’t yet listed on MyBama for next year.

Unfortunately, since your Math + CR is a 1120, I don’t think that’s high enough for an assured merit scholarship. The minimum score needed for a small scholarship is a 1210.

Did you look at the scholarship page when you applied?
[Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html)

You might be awarded a small amount when the other scholarships are awarded, but the amount may not be very high. What major did you put down? How much merit were you expecting?

Thank you. I put down political science and honestly wasn’t sure how much merit I would get. I wasnt expecting much, maybe 3-5 K MAXIMUM.
