Thank you for chancing! If you see any other schools that would fit well comment below and let me know what I should improve the most on my application.

All are fairly high reaches. Good GPA, but try to bring up the SAT score. Your schedules look good, although the math level is not what I usually see for MIT (take Calc BC for sure!!). If you get your SATs up to 2200+, they’re still reaches, but your chances look better. Good luck!

I really don’t think you have a very good chance at any of them right now. If you could raise your CR and writing scores 100 points each and do something that really showed passion for biomed, I think you may have a chance at Duke.

For Princeton and MIT there isn’t you can do. You really would want a 800 Math II score and strong history of STEM focused ECs, but other than the Math society president (Have you done any AMC, AIME, USAMO, or other math competitions?) there isn’t that and nothing remotely related to biomed.

I say that you should not give up on Duke and MIT and maybe even still apply to all three, but do not assume that you will get into any of them. Do you know of anywhere in-state that has a strong engineering program?

Reach for all as of now. Try to improve your scores.

Thanks luisarose! Im definitely taking AP calc ab/bc next year and Im taking both tests one more time.
Okay: I get what your saying, but I really didnt decide until very recently that I wanted to pursue biomed and I still dont even know if thats what I want. Also, those three schools are all my dreams schools and all are reaches. Do you think it would be worth it if I applied ED to Duke. It is definitely my first choice but we are not financial secure because I have two older siblings going through college.

If you are around or above admission average, you may have a better chance with ED. If not, it is likely to be deferred or rejected. Right now, you are at or below the 25%. In addition, these schools are highly competitive that even 2200+/33+ still would not have a good chance.

Billcsho: How come you put so much emphasis on test scores? Are they that important? As of right now I have higher test scores than 25% of the students that got in so how can it be that influential.

scoob822: chancing based on stat. It is not me that emphasis on the score. For those students got accepted with below average score, they would have very strong EC or much better scores in the other test. (For instance, having average SAT but 75% for ACT.) For those that are at or below 25% admission stat, they would have outstanding EC such as national awards, invention, research experience with publications, etc. So score is not the only thing that involved but it plays a critical role. Both your SAT and ACT scores are around 25%. GPA is slightly above average, EC below average. All these make you a reach for these top schools. The only thing you can improve significantly before application deadline is your test score.

Billcsho: Thank you! Now I get where you are coming from and I will definitely study a lot more before this upcoming test. How big of a deal are my cr and w scores even if Im applying to pratt because I have an 800 m score.

Having 800 in Math is very good particularly for engineering schools. CR is more important than writing for most schools for historical reason. Many admission stats are still based on CR+M score which is also sometimes used for ACT score conversion. In general, you need 1400+ for good schools and 1500+ for top schools (e.g. Ivies). In other words, you really want to get your CR above 700 for any good schools.

Billcsho: Other than practice tests, what are some ways I could improve my CR score? I have until June 1st and I normally only miss one or two vocab questions and 8-12 reading questions.

If vocab is not your main concern, you may just need to read faster. There is not much time before June 1. I would still suggest you to do more practice with focus on the reading. Also, it is very easy to improve your essay score. Don’t underestimate that part. An essay score of 10 would also bump up your writing score a lot.

As of right now, they are all reaches. Work on getting the SAT to a 2200 or higher, or the ACT to a 33 or higher. That would make them more so reachable, but still reaches. These are some of the most competitive schools in the country, so don’t take the fact that they are reaches as something against you, or your achievements.

Billscho: Do I have a chance at any ivy’s? Even the ones on the lower end?

Update: I got both my sat and act test scores back and this was the last time I was going to take them. For my SAT, i got a 2060 760M 660CR 640W 8 essay which would give me a superscore of 2100. For the ACT i got a 33 composite with a 36M 32R 32W 33S and an 8 essay. Im so proud of my act score and i was only one point away from getting a 34! Once again, I changed my mind on what I want to major in. Now, I am leaning towards environmental engineering, and a friend and I are in the process of creating a club called “The Green Team” which would clean up around our community and promote environmentally sustainable activities. I was just wondering how big of an influence did these changes make on my admission chances and what I could work on to further improve my chances.

Good for you. Your latest ACT score put you in the game for these schools.

Could I get a full ride or high scholarship offers from schools like nc state, clemson and unc because I cant decide whether I should apply early decision to duke or not pending the possible financial offers?
