Hi, I'm gonna be a senior next year and I really want to go to UCLA. So i was wondering what my chances are with these stats:
GPA: 4.0/4.5 UW/W (it might be 3.95 UW, but I doubt that will make a difference)
ACT: 33
No subject tests :(
9 AP classes + 1 honors class
Intended Major: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

ECs: (my main issue is i have basically no leadership at all)
4 years Tennis (co-captain 1 year, 2 years varsity)
2 years Debate Club
2 years Best Buddies Club
2 years Clear Windows Club
1 year Character Counts Club

150 hours of hospital volunteering
20ish hours of various orange county environmental projects
10 hours of library volunteering lol

So, the things that are holding me back I think are having no leadership positions, no subject tests, and going for a biology major. But would my good GPA and decent ACT score help me get in?

GPAs look good. ACT looks good. It sounds like being co-captain of Tennis would be a leadership experience. Don’t be too worried–having a leadership position isn’t a requirement for admission. Rather, you could exhibit leadership *qualities/i, and that will make you a better applicant. If you’re really worried about lacking the subject tests, then pay the money and register for one. If money is an issue, ask your school for a fee waiver. Class rigor looks good as well. Your activities will not hold you back. I don’t see why going for a biology major holds you back. Focus on making your application shine, including the personal statements, and you have a good chance of being admitted.

I think you have a pretty good shot. You have way more extracurriculars than I did and about the same GPA as I did and I got in
Oh and I was in Tennis all 4 years of high school too! I was Co-Captain my Junior year and Captain my Senior year! ^.^

Your are on target with your uw/w GPA, ACT score, AP courses and ECs. I wouldn’t bother with taking a SAT Subject Exam.

You fit the Profile of Admitted Freshmen for Fall 2013 from the data set provided by the UCLA Undergraduate Admissions Office:

94% of all freshmen admitted to UCLA had fully weighted GPAs above 4.0 in 10th 11th grade with the average being a 4.4 GPA.
89% of all freshmen admitted to UCLA had unweighted 3.70 4.0 GPAs in 10th 11th grade with a 70% admit rate for students with unweighted GPAs of 4.0.

In addition, you have a good solid list of ECs. A laundry list of activities is not needed. UCLA is looking for depth and commitment here. Showing substantial leadership in the ECs you’re committed to will make you a stronger candidate.

Moreover, UCLA lists the following as “Most Important” for its selection of students:
- Rigor of Courses taken at your High School
- Academic GPA
- Standardized Tests (SAT or ACT)
- Personal Statement Essay

It looks like you have the top 3 of these covered, but because UCLA attracts thousands of strong applicants like you, be sure you leave no doubt by writing an excellent personal statement.

Your GPA and ACT scores are right on target for UCLA. Obviously since your intended major is biology, a subject test in bio or another science would help boost your application. Especially since many schools outside of the UC system require at least two SAT Subject tests, taking some would be a good idea if you are planning to apply to non-UCs.

Your ECs are not bad: co-captain of a sports team is definitely shows leadership. The hospital volunteering shows interest in your major. There is room for more ECs if, for example, you run for board of a club this fall or maybe even found one (I know people who founded clubs like Future Medical Leaders, Biology club, etc).

UCs do put more weight on the numbers and rigor, so in that aspect, I think you have a good chance at UCLA.
