Chance Me? PLEASE.

Can you please tell me my chances to get into this university? It is my dream school!
I want to major in Journalism or Communication, so either VPA or Newhouse (my first choice).

GPA: UW: 2.44 W: 2.52 (went through A LOT of personal troubles throughout 9th/10th grade that will go into my essays)
Also, there was a problem with my transcript not having a grade for another course I had taken. My GPA is probably actually around a 2.7-2.8 because I got an A+ in another course.

ACT: Not taken yet, but will probably have a 25-28 due to prep class.
SAT: taken early junior year before I had any practice or preparation.
1300 (Math: 460 Writing: 460 Reading: 380) terrible, I know.
the next time i take it, i will hopefully get a 1700-1800+

I'm an excellent essay writer, so my essays will be superb!

What do you think? Those are all of the ECs I can think of :/

Applying ED, also to take into consideration. I have an interview in October.
Thank you!

Also, I attend a somewhat competitive charter school of 400 students

your chances are really slim. Newhouse you’re expected to have a 3.6-3.9 with APs/Honors (and 3.6 is at the low end) plus 1900-2100 SAT, along with ECs. It’s possible to get in if you have great ECs…I’m pretty that’s how I got in with a 3.4 unweighted and a 1920 SAT score.

You need to be in mid 600s or so with your SAT. Idk about your GPA…I know you said you had problems in 9th/10th grade, but being below 3.5 or even 3.0 is rough.

I wish you the best of luck! Sorry this probably wasn’t what you wanted to hear, but I’m being as honest as I can.

Bring up your GPA and aim for a very high ACT score (29 +) and you might have a chance because your ECs are exceptional. Consider applying Early Decision to Newhouse and this might improve your chances, especially if you have shown interest by visiting.

If you are really interested in journalism, you should also consider the University of Missouri at Columbia. If you get an ACT score of 29 or SAT 1290 (verbal + math), regardless of your GPA you will be admitted. Also, as an URM, you can apply for a scholarship that will waiver the out of state fees, making Missouri significantly more economical than SU.
