Chance me please?

Hi! I'm a senior from Arizona and currently looking at colleges for next year, and I'm getting quite anxious as to my chances at going where I would like to go...

My intended major is Chemical Engineering, and I've been looking into schools in California such as UC Berkeley, USC, and UCLA. I have also been looking in state but I have little fear as to my chances for making into those schools. So I guess my main concern lies in whether or not I am likely to be accepted at UC Berkeley and USC.

My unweighted GPA is 4.0, I take all honors and AP classes (we are required to take these classes at our school). I am ranked first in my class of about 50. My AP scores are: 4 in AP World History, 5 in AP Language & Composition, 4 in AP U.S. History. I received a 2240 on the SAT (740 Math, 740 Reading, 760 Writing) and am taking the ACT two weeks from today. This year's AP classes are Chemistry, Calculus BC, and Literature.

My extracurriculars include the Varsity Swim Team (of which I've been captain for the last two years), National Honors Society (in which I've held an officer position as Treasurer), Music Council (Treasurer in 10th grade, Librarian in 11th grade, and Orchestra Rep this year), an a cappella club I've started with my friends, the Tennis Team freshman year, lead and supporting roles in various Drama Club productions, contributor to the school newspaper, and I'm sure there are other school-related ones I am forgetting.

I am also heavily involved in music. I am a singer-songwriter, and I've actually been on a couple of music reality shows, one with a relatively large audience. I do regular performances locally and around the country for audiences of anywhere from 80-500 people, so I devote a LOT of time to my music. I know this isn't necessarily related to my intended major but it's something I'm very passionate about that I've had moderate success with so that has to count for something!

As far as community service goes, we are required to have 80 completed to graduate, on top of the 60 I will have garnered from National Honors society. So upon graduation I will have completed 140+ hours of community service.

I don't know how significant awards and recognition are, and I don't feel I have received any incredible recognition, but I have received minor awards like the "Outstanding Musicianship Award" at a festival my orchestra attended in Anaheim, which was pretty cool because they picked one person from the entire ensemble of about 50 students that they saw fit for the award. I've also been given a "Virtue Award" at school, as well as the team spirit award for Swim Team. All four years of high school I've received the "Golden Scholar Award" for maintaining a GPA of 3.8 or higher.

I'm going to be taking my SAT IIs in October, one of them will be Chemistry as that is my intended field of study, and the other will probably be Math II. Not quite sure yet, so any recommendations for that would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for looking this over, hope to hear back from some of you!

You have a good shot at all of these colleges! Apply early!
You have a very good chance!!! I would say APPLY. I am a student just like you and am looking for some advice. I want to go to premed. AND i take the most rigouros course in my school. I have always found science interesting! And wanted to help the underpriveleged. Deff not for the money. HOw would i keep my grades at 4.0 and what activities would make me a shoo-in. btw im a sophmore

@jumpstart98 Well it’s good that you’re passionate about it, that’s definitely an indication that you’re heading in the right direction. As to how you might keep your grades up, 95% of your grades is simply how much work you put into your classes. Some people might be smarter than others but if you really work hard and want to do well, I promise you can do well. And as for community service and extracurricular activities, I wouldn’t look for what has you “a shoo-in” but rather things that you are passionate about that, if at all possible, relate to the field. Look for internship/volunteer opportunities at a local hospital or nursing home, or for clubs at your school related to the sciences or medical field!
