Chance me please

Hey guys,

I'm up late today panicking that I won't be able to get into UF, please help me figure out my position. I may still have time to fix a few things.

760 Math
640 Writing

28 ACT (sigh)

4.86 WGPA / 3.81 UWGPA
(My WGPA should be the same GPA UF calculates as they use the same rules.)

I am also in an externship program, which allows me to be an extern at an profession of my likings, of which I've chosen General Surgeon. I shadow him eight hours a week, and write a report on my experiences and receive a grade.

Volunteer Work:

cleaning, talking with patients.

and cleaning litter.

This basically covers Bright Futures.

Extracurriculars:

Wrestling Team: 2 years (received award for highest GPA)

MOA: 2 years

NHS: 1 year

NSHS: 1 year

Thats basically it for mt EC, which i think are pretty weak. I had to drop a lot of stuff to have time for my dual enrollment classes. Should I try to fit in a few more EC's?

So can you guys help me figure out if I have a chance of entering UF, as my ECs are pretty weak and my SAT/ACT scores seem a bit low.

Also what type of financial aid is available for a student like myself. I am Asian and my parents make about $55k a year, with 4 children including myself.

I wouldn’t be worried at all

Your SAT/GPA (both are in the top 25%) and EC’s are fine. Work on that Essay!

Use UF’s Net Price Calculator to give you some sense of cost.

<a href=“Net Price Calculator”>Net Price Calculator;

You’re likely to recieve a pell grant, bright futures, possible another state/uf grant, work and loans, as part of your FA package.

What is there to be worried about…people need to have more confidence. UF could be your safety school.

It’s almost an insult that you’re worried. I don’t have half of what you have and I’m still trying to have some hope. Lol.

18 AP Classes?!?!

Lol UF Is your safety.

Chance me back.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1562905-ut-austin-nyu-lsp-syracuse-u-m.html</a></p>

Thanks to “Holistic Admissions”, UF is never a safety. :(

Really, you have the stats (in the top 25%), but you do need to put some effort into your essay. If you do, I’m sure you’ll be accepted. DO NOT write in your essay, “how you’ve been looking forward to being a Seminole…”…that would be bad. :)

50% of admissions is GPA/SAT/Class Rigor, the other 50% is EC/Leadership/Essay. Do a decent job on the essay, and you’ll be fine.

If you are getting your high school diploma and the Associate of Arts degree at the same time, you still complete the freshman application. However, you must apply to a specific UF college and major, and you must meet the college and major prerequisite course and minimum GPA requirements. You’re GPA should be fine, as well as your prerequisites (for pre-med), but check UF’s website and the transfer requirements for your major (Bio, Chem, whatever…).

Good Luck!

No, I am not going to receive an AA degree, so I’ll be entering as a normal student. I’ll be 35 credits from my major, according to the GE requirements and major requirements. On their website they explained that a max of 45 credit hours can be used from AP/IB credits, and 60 from Dual Enrollment. I’ll be using 40 from AP and about 46 from DE. According to the numbers, I could be finished with college within 3 semesters (summer, fall, spring). Would I face any obstacles pursuing such a goal?

It was mostly possible due to Florida Virtual School, which allowed me to be able to finish each class in a matter of weeks. I took 7 from FLVS, the rest are from school.

You should talk with someone in admissions. It sounds like you’re trying to bring in more than 60 credits, so you may have to apply to your college/major (which isn’t a problem, just a step you need to do).

Also, UF may not allow you to bring in as many AP credits as you think…for example, you would get credit for Calc 2 (DE), but not also for the AP classes in Calc AB (or even BC). Same with your Bio AP class (it’s superseded by your DE classes). See the following link:

https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/advising/info/AP-examination-credit-info.aspx</a></p>

Some of your AP classes count to the minimum hours for the degree but do not provide credit toward general education, writing and math, or count toward the major. For example, your AP Environmental Science maps to ISC 0301 and wouldn’t count toward your major.

It’s all a bit complicated, so please contact admissions and have someone clarify it all for you. Tell them you plan on bring in 46 DE credits and a bunch of AP credits (over 60 total DE/AP credits) and then ask them if you have to apply to your college/major as part of your freshmen application.

Office of Admissions: 352-392-1365

Good Luck!

As I posted my first post, I saw yours, and quite honesty, I’m impress.
As a prior members stated, Florida is surely a safety school for you at this point.
My only concern is your weighed GPA vs. your straight GPA….
You cannot have more than 1.00 (+) added to your straight GPA, thus your weighed GPA is incorrect.
As long as your “true” UF weighed GPA is over a 4.25, you have no worries….

Accepted to Texas A&M university, but idk if it is a good school.

Essay about abusive father so couldn’t get involve in school that much, talked about money problems since we came from Africa, and my volunteering experience with a cancer patient who later died and changed my life.

The school only gave me the weighted and I had to calculate the UNW myself. I may have made a mistake.

FasterYo, your GPA should be fine, a 3.81 GPA should come out somewhere between 4.2 and 4.6 (with all of those DE classes…).

135pipe, if you get your ACT score up over a 26 (closer to a 28) you should be fine(GPA, EC’s and Essay are all good). Texas A&M is a GREAT school, especially if you’re thinking STEM. Based on your major, I’m not sure UF would be worth the OOS tuition ($28K/year at UF, vs. TAMU ($8.5K/year)

Remember! The deadline is Nov 1st, with test scores (SAT/ACT) needing to be sent to UF by December. You also have to complete a SAR (self reported academic record) by December 1st, UF is not taking transcripts (till after you’ve been accepted). You’ll need a copy of your HS transcripts, to be able to fill out the SAR (you do NOT want to make any mistakes on the SAR, as it could cause UF to rescind an offer).

Good Luck!

According to this 60 credits can come from DE:
[University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

And 45 can come from AP:
[University of Florida - Admissions](Transfer Course Credit - University of Florida)

The 30 last credits from the major must be done at the college, which I will be.
I’ll try to call them later to clarify things. I dont understand why Calc AB can’t be used for Calc. 1 and Calc. II can be done as DE.
