What are my chances of getting into the University of Virginia? I'm currently a sophomore, and my GPA is a 4.31 weighted, 4.0 unweighted. My GPA for this year is a 4.60 and I'm taking all honors classes, and AP World History. I'm planning to take AP Lang, AP US history, and AP Bio next year, and AP Calculus, AP French, AP Psychology, AP lit, and maybe AP Chem my senior year. I'm taking out my study hall next year to be a teacher assistant for my French teacher because I'm a leader in my class. I'm a straight A student, top 5-10% of my class. I don't play any sports, but I joined debate this year, I was in key club last year and this year and have over 100 hours of community service. I am in the SNHS (science national honors society), the FNHS (the french national honors society), and I will join the NHS (national honors society) junior year therefore I tutor some fellow classmates. I'm also in UNICEF (another volunteering club to help countries stricken with poverty), and French club. I got the academic excellence award, I got into district chorus my first year in choir (which is this year), and I play the piano, guitar, violin, and ukulele. This summer, I'm planning to work in a dentist office, volunteer for the red cross and prep for the SAT. I know I'm not that accomplished but would this be enough for me to have a chance of getting into UVA?

You don’t have any leadership positions as EC
Match if instate
low reach if OOS
chance

@MBenz23 I’m going to run for secretary in one of the national honors societies that I’m in and UNICEF. Yes I’m instate.

That would help
can i have a chance

Grade-wise you’re fine but I think your ECs are kind of scattered and seem like run-of-the-mill ECs that people slap on to make it look like they’ve done something. They’re ok but don’t stand out at all in my opinion. You’re qualified and have a good shot at UVA but nothing really stands out to me as exceptional and I think you could increase your chances by doing things that are more unique and/or specialized. Keep up the great work though!

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1619040-cornell-cals-chances-what-should-i-do-to-prepare.html#latest

@cloverbox Thank you for your opinion! What would be considered more unique/specialized?

It really depends on what you want to do career-wise. It looks like you’re interested in French and music (not sure where the dentist thing fits in lol) so maybe try joining an orchestra or have your French class be penpals with a school in France?? It’s good to initiate stuff and start things on your own since it shows leadership and colleges like that. I guess basically what I’m getting at is to treat this whole thing like a thesis essay-- find your point/purpose/argument and then drive it home using your ECs so they hit nearly everything that you want to show off to colleges and/or do in life. Don’t worry too much about academics because your grades are solid and just try and focus on doing what you love and it’ll show. Good luck!!

Oh okay I understand! I want to major in nursing, so the honors societies, UNICEF, and key club shows that I like to help people, debate and French show I have good communication skills. Working at a dentist office and volunteering for the red cross shows that I’m interested in the medical field. Also the lady I’m working for has connections with people so that’s good I guess. Maybe I’ll try to restart a medical club in my school then. Thank you so much though, good luck to you too! @cloverbox

how did you do on the psat? its a good estimate so we can chance you better
