Hi, I was curious of my chances to getting accepted to the university of Florida. I am looking to major in computer science or software engineering.
Unweighted gpa: 3.4
UFs gpa: 3.69(1 point for ap, .5 point for honors)
Sat: 1820
Math: 700
Verbal: 590
Writing; 530
Act: 26
3 ap classes: psych calc and stats, possibly a 4th still I'm not sure.
Ethnicity: white
Also I live in Florida and have 100 volunteer hours.

Also, if you can think of any better cs colleges that would admit me I'd be happy to hear your suggestions?
I am like 30 percentile in my class also.
Lastly I am looking to major I. Computer science.

Thanks, Djay

Hi Djay,

UF looks like a low reach/high match. Your UF GPA is a bit low.

Middle 50% of the 2013 Class

High School GPA of 4.1 - 4.4
SAT of 1780-2020
ACT of 26 - 31

94%+ of the class had a GPA of 3.75 or greater.
97.6% of the class was in the top 25%.

UF uses holistic admissions, with 50% being academic (GPA/Class rigor/Test scores/essay), the other 50% is EC’s (volunteer work, leadership, work experience, clubs, etc). You EC’s also seem weak (since you only listed one).

You can apply to UF, since it never hurts ($30 application fee), but you should also be looking at Florida’s other public Universities. Several of them have very good CS programs. Other than UF and FSU, the other schools are on rolling admissions, so you could apply in September and be accepted by November. Some may even offer you merit scholarships.

Finally, UF takes in large number of transfer students. You can always go to school for 2 years at a CC or another public university and then transfer to UF. Then your HS GPA will not matter.

Good Luck!

Thanks so much!
Do you think if I brought my math sat up to an 800 that would help my chances since I am going into CS?

Thanks in advance

Also what is your take on the ucf vs Fsu cs programs?

@Djay1016 increasing your SAT math to 800 would help, but not significantly. You’re UF GPA looks weak and so does your ECs. As Gator88 mentioned, it is a low reach for you. If you’re applying for the 2015 admissions, there may not be too much you can do since the application is due November 1st.

UF is very holistic so there are times when some students with lower scores getting in. You can try to apply, but apply to others as well.

I can’t give any opinions to FSU CS, but a couple HS friends of mine are doing software engineering at UCF and they love it. I’ll ask about it and post back soon.

Good luck!
