What do you think my chances are at UW?

Pretty good, but can you afford their tuition and fees? They don’t have scholarships for OOS students.

I will probably be able to afford the tuition. Other than that, how do my chances look?

I think they are good but you have to consider that tuition of $60k. There are schools in California for less money.

It is $48,000 out of state.

Yes, tuition is $48000 for non-residents, but I think @aunt bea was referring to the total cost of attendance including insurance and room&board.

There is a Purple and Gold Scholarship that OOS students can receive (at least in years past). I believe it ranges from around $3000 to around $8000 per year for four years.

Tuition for OOS is about $33k. Total cost including room and board, books and transportation is about $45k. The admissions website has the actual figures.

By the way, sf20122010, I think you have a very good chance. You should also consider applying to UW’s highly selective Honors Program.

I Googled and found more information about the Purple and Gold Scholarship for OOS students at UW:

“All admitted U.S. students are automatically considered for this four-year scholarship. For autumn 2014, scholarship amounts range from $4,000 to $9,000 per year ($16,000 to $36,000 over four years) and were awarded to about one half of U.S. students who are not residents of Washington State.”

<a href=“Scholarships | Office of Admissions”>http://admit.washington.edu/Paying/PurpleGold</a></p>

It is more money and benefits more students than I thought.

And here are the stats on this year’s Honors Program class:

(Unweighted) high school GPA (middle 50%): 3.87-4.00
SAT (middle 50%): 1950-2200
ACT (middle 50%): 30-33

Thanks, is the scholarship based on academic record @UWfromCA‌ ?

I believe it is a merit scholarship, but you might check with the financial aid office to see if financial need is also a consideration.

If you’re worried about tuition, definitely check out the WUE. Since you’re in California, you qualify to pay 1.5 of in-state tuition even though you’re an out-of-state student, which can definitely cut down on the price.

Unfortunately, UW is not a WUE participating university. Wish they were! http://wue.wiche.edu/search_results.jsp?searchType=all</a></p>
