Essays:
PS focuses on how I'm a minority in my own family, and on my involvement in Judaism. Two english teachers have helped me write it.
My "why Tulane?" essay is about how I want to involve myself in organizations involving my jewish culture as well as my african american heritage so that I can finally become a part of something that is so central to my identity. I also talk about other specific reasons I want to attend.
Hook-
Interesting background story. Only knew my biological father the first year of my life and he severely abused my mother and I. She escaped and married my adoptive father. I'm African American (half) and my mom and dad and sisters are white (and all of my other relatives) so I've never gotten to know anything or connect with my heritage at all. I am also Jewish.

additional information:
My mom was an active alcoholic up through my first two years of high school. My grades freshman year suffered as a result, and I didn't take the most challenging courses I could because I was worried about my younger sisters and making sure I was there to look after them and give them a positive role model in the home. She is doing amazing now, she went to a rehabilitation facility and got the help she needed and she is enrolled in school right now going for a degree in social work (to hep people who were in a situation like her own). I wrote about this as well. Do you think Tulane will be forgiving of my lackluster grades when they see this?

I would really appreciate any feedback

Also incase it makes a difference- I am from Arizona which is one of the least represented states geographically at Tulane.

I think your chances are better than 50-50, based solely on what you can tell us. Among other problems with chance posts, we cannot see your essays nor the statement from your high school GC.

Unlike some of the bigger schools, I think Tulane looks at the whole person. Have you had any contact with your rep? You appear to be a good fit for Tulane and that the improvement in your grades over the last four years is a positive. Good luck!

Thank you all for your feedback, I received my acceptance letter in the mail today! Also received a 10,000 dollar leadership award scholarship  This alone won’t bring down the cost really to “affordable” but I am definitely going to research some more scholarship opportunities, I would love to be a part of the class of 2019!

Congratulations! Besides outside scholarships, need based financial aid is also available. That is separate from merit scholarships, and I think those forms are due by the middle of February. You probably already knew all that.
