Chance me please.

Hi, I’m new to the forum, so please excuse me if I posted this at the wrong place, or in wrong format etc.

I’m currently a Senior in High School.

I have applied to the following schools:

UC Berkeley, Social Sciences (Psychology)
UC Davis, English Major, Psychology Alt. Major
UC Irvine, English, Sociology
UC Santa Barbara, Anthropology (Biological Emphasis), English
UC Santa Cruz, Literature (Creative Writing), Psychology

3.67 UC GPA

Have taken the courses IB Theatre HL1 and HL2, AP Environmental Science, French IB SL, English IB SL, IB Language and Literature SL

SAT: 1490 (horrible I know)
ACT: 24

I am Turkish, caucasian. First generation.
In my honest opinion, I think I wrote a pretty good response to the first prompt of my personal statement, and for the 2nd prompt I took a risk and talked about how a video game I’ve been playing for the past 7 years has helped me in my management skills etc. My friends and teachers say it is very unique.

I’ve worked part-time for 3 years of my high school years, and have volunteered a decent amount. I have a couple of awards to my name and a dozen certificates from services and participation.

2 years of Varsity Swimming
1 year of Cross Country

President of an ASB-affiliated Podcast club for the past 2 years, we have a youtube channel and subscribers, going pretty good. Been a member in the Anti-Bullying Club, Chess Club, Swimming Club, for a couple of years, and a few others.

I am in the school’s Biotechnology Academy, been in it for 3 years.

I have many performances to my name in my Drama class and Drama club, playing in many Shakespeare plays and such. This will also be one of my extracurriculars I will be doing in college.

and I think that’s it
thanks for reading

Hi,

I’ll be honest,

With these test scores i don’t think you’re gonna make it in a UC. Your best shot would be santa cruz, but even there you are below average, especially SAT (1780 average).

So basically your SAT is 300 points below average for the easiest UC. And you’re almost 600 points below for berkeley, which makes it out of reach in my opinion.

Your app has strenghts, but i hope you also applied to other schools because all these schools are reaches for you, and there is a very high chance you won’t get into any of them.

I would recommend using your ACT instead of SAT, which is better. It will increase your chances.

Best of luck, and don’t forget to post the results when you have them

UCB: High Reach
UCD/UCI/UCSB: Reach
UCSC: Low Reach

I agree with @meriks. Your ACT/SAT and GPA are way below the averages for all the schools listed. If you are California resident, I hope you applied to some safeties such as your in-service area Cal state. I hate to see you shut out of all your choices. Good Luck

Thanks for the honesty. I’ve applied to 4 CSU’s (sjsu, sdsu, sfsu, csu sac), in which I’ve gotten into 2 (sfsu, csu sac) already. I’ll post up the decisions when the time comes. Thanks again.

You should have tried UC Merced and other lower UC’s. Your chances are very bleak in the UC’s you mentioned.

I agree with the consensus, unless you are ELC, UCs are out of reach with your stats. Fortunately, you’ve got some good options with CSUs. My guess is, you’ll make it into SDSU and SJSU as well.

Good luck

Hi, just an update of my status. I am waitlisted for UC Davis, and accepted into UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara. Waiting the decisions for UC Berkeley and UC Irvine.

Thanks for the help guys.

Congratulations kid, way to prove that stats aren’t everything.
