Asian male, goes to public school with 3k+ students

As the mother of two Asian STEM students, I know you’ve got an uphill battle because you’re Asian. I think I can provide some accurate advice here, but have some further questions for you. Further questions: how good will your faculty recs be? Like, do your teachers think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, or do they just see you as another intelligent and driven student? Also, geographic region? And what is your proposed college major - are you going the life/physical sciences or engineering route?

  1. My faculty recs will be decent. I try to be seen as a diligent student, and I have some good personal connections with my teachers.
  2. I live in the midwest.
  3. I'm not 100% sure about my majors that I will pursue in college, but I am leaning towards studying math, either pure or applied.

It’s good that you live in the midwest. That will help.

So glad you said mathematics! It will be somewhat less common at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton (especially at Yale, where I think you have the best chance). I’d be lying if I told you your chances at any of these schools is better than a coin flip. Shoot to really nail your essays. If you work with a good essay advisor, you’ll seem different from a lot of the other Asian applicants. Be excited about your admissions chances - regardless of whether you get HYPSM, you’re going to do very well this cycle. Nail those essays!
