Michigan is my top choice and I did apply EA, but if I have to wait until RD I’ll be happy as long as I’m accepted
OOS (small private school in PA)
White Male
ACT: 34
New SAT: 1490 (not reported)
Weighted GPA: 4.08 (my school has a weird scale that’s about A-/A average)
Freshmen year - 4.14 GPA (all honors classes)
Sophomore year - 3.99 GPA (all honors classes)
Junior year - 4.08 GPA (4 AP classes)
Senior year - 4.09 GPA currently (3 AP classes)
No Class Rank
Applying to CoE with specific interest in Biomedical Engineering
Commended National Merit Scholar for 2016
Member of NHS and SNHS
Extracurricular: Robotics (Head Electrical), Spanish Club, Academic Competition Team, Crew (1 year), Freshmen Football, JV Lacrosse (1 year), Stock Market Club, many hours of service in local Philadelphia area and even took a trip with Rustic Pathways to Costa Rica (made that a huge focal point on my apps), worked as a pool lifeguard past 3 years
Conducted research with Sports medicine team on campus dealing with concussions in Lacrosse + wrestling
7 APs done by the end of this year (Chem (3), AB (4) + BC Calc, Bio, Lang and Comp (4), US History (4), Econ) I didn’t send any AP scores though
Essays are very good according to what I have heard from counselors
Recommendations should be very good (Chem and AB teacher)
Weakness: Grades aren’t THAT spectacular (esp AP scores) and not that many extracurricular activities (I have put a lot of time into robotics though)
I think you’re in good shape. You’ve got a good GPA, Good ACT. You are applying to an insanely competitive school and being out of state makes that worse…BUT…You’ve taken AP Chem, Bio, and Calc…which will help you, even if your scores are not perfect. I’d give you 70% odds of getting in.
@MaryGJ thanks for the feedback! I’m really hoping being OOS doesn’t hurt me too much. I know they show a lot of favor toward IS kids (as they should), so hopefully there is room for me.
@gmys32 I applied EA OOS this year as well. Being an OOS does make it a lot harder to get into Michigan, and a lot of OOS are first deferred to regular decision. You have a great ACT score, but you did have a dip in grades which may or may not hurt you since you brought them back up these past two years. I would say that you make not get accepted right away but have a good chance at getting deferred and then that decision will really depend on what the rest of the applicant pool looks like.
@keanne20 I’m hoping I get accepted right away just so I don’t have to worry any longer, but I do know that there is a very high probability of it happening just being OOS. Good luck to you I hope that we both hear good news in the next coming weeks!
