Chance Me Please?

Hello, everyone! I’m new here on CC, so I’m not sure if I’m doing this right… but I was hoping to get some advice from all you university-savvy people. I’m a female South Korean, and I would appreciate it if you would please chance me for Brown University. (Other university recommendations would be very helpful.) I’m thinking of English Literature as my hopeful major, but I’m considering others as well.

SAT (Old): 2280 superscore (CR: 790, M: 770, W: 720)
SAT2 Math2C 800
SAT2 US History 760
AP Eng Lit 4, AP Psychology 5
GPA: Uncertain
ECs:
Member of the Lacrosse Team
Co-Editor in Chief of the Student Newspaper
Student Council

I have 1 year of high school left, and I was hoping for some advice on other things that I could do regarding APs, SATs, ECs…?

I’m also in the IB Programme, I take the following subjects:
History HL
English A Language and Literature HL
Biology HL
Japanese B SL
Math SL
Korean A Literature SL
I’m hoping for an IB score of around 38+/45, but that depends on my senior year… I’m also considering AP Eng Lang, AP Bio, and SAT2 Eng Lit next year. Any advice/warnings would be very helpful!

Please help!

Do you need financial aid?

@fireandrain does need for financial aid matter for domestic applicants?

International student.

Are you a junior or senior.

If junior schools might not accept old SAT.

The OP said she was from South Korea, which is why I asked the question. Brown is need blind for domestic students. It is not for international students – an international applicant has to be exceptional to be accepted with a lot of financial need.

Second what @ClarinetDad16 said. I’m searching for colleges now (senior), and a good number of schools said that this round is the last time they’ll accept the old SAT. Worth a phone call (or a quick Google search).
Vassar is a great school with an acceptance rate that’s a little more manageable, and shares a lot of traits with Brown, including the open curriculum and the generally friendly (read: not as aggressively competitive) environment. It’s also my personal first choice ( )
And advice from a current senior going through this whole process: bump up everything that’s NOT stats related as much as possible. Your EC’s aren’t that strong, but there’s still time to grow! Go deeper. Make your clubs better, run for office, find something to do that you absolutely love that’s not studying (fellow egghead here). Everyone will have good stats, but not everyone will have a passion for theater/shark diving/raising homeless puppies. Find what makes you, YOU. Colleges want students who will make a difference, so prove that you can.
And please, find plenty of schools you like. Don’t apply to a million schools just for the sake of it, but make sure you have a solid list of schools across all levels of acceptance rate that you would be more than happy to go to. Not saying Brown won’t happen, it absolutely can, but you want to have backups just in case.
Best of luck!

(Oh, and enter some writing competitions! Great way to show just how good you are at what you love.)

I’m a junior, but I took the old SAT last year. I’m afraid that I may not have enough time to restudy for the new SAT next year… South Korea only lets students take the SAT maybe 4 times a year, and I’m running out of time. (Is it true that you are only allowed to take the SAT 3 times if you are an international student?) I am also aware that international students will not get much financial aid, even if I do apply for it, so I probably won’t apply for any.

I am absolutely looking for other schools, but the amount of information here is limited because not many people know of universities other than the famous (i.e. top tier) schools. Thank you for all of your advice. Please suggest any other schools that you think will be a good fit for me!

Please tell me how I could add to my ECs if you have any ideas! I’m afraid that I have a handful of prizes in English Language, but as they are all based in Korea, I’m not sure if they will be good enough. I would absolutely love to enter writing competitions, but most of the things I find online seem to be either frauds or only for American high schoolers. I have written a few short stories, if that counts for anything…

Thank you so much for your responses!

I have just checked the Brown website!

It says:
“We will continue to accept scores from the current SAT or ACT for several more years.”

It is autumn of your junior year- you have almost a full year to take the SAT exam again. Great that Brown will keep accepting the old SAT but check out other colleges that you are interested in- I suspect Brown may be in the minority.

The great thing about the internet is that the information is no longer limited. Try the ‘supermatch’ in the upper left hand corner of this page for some ideas. The college websites have lots of information, and this site (CC) has forums for most every college & lots of people willing to be helpful.
