Chance Me Please

I’m an asian male living in the bay area, and applying to all the UCs except for merced,LA,and SB. Im also applying to SJSU, CPSLO, and CPP.

SLOGPA - 3.84W
UC and CSU - 3.74W

SAT: 1260(retaking)

Low amount of ECs.

6APs, and 2 Honors

CPP/UCR: Match
UCSC: Match-High Match
UCI/UCD: Low Reach-Reach
UCSD/SJSU: Reach
SLO/UCB: High Reach

I see no safeties and you should add a few more Cal states as Match and Safety schools: SDSU, CSULB, East Bay, CSU Fullerton and your local CSU for example.

Your GPA and test scores are low for the majority of schools on your list.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:

UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%
UCR: 78%
UCM: 92%

Oh, wow…Thank you Gumbymom. SJSU becoming that competitive?, oh does this help that I’m applying as a software engineer, not computer science, sorry.

SJSU’s eligibility index for CS this year was a 4500. You are at 4252 at the moment. For SE, 3900 EI was the threshold so you are good.

Im also taking Math 2 and Physics Subject tests in Oct, would that help my application a lot more?

Sorry for bothering you so much, but last question, does class rigor help with my app at all, because I took the majority of Honors/AP classes that was available for each grade, cause my friend that took 1 AP has a 4.0W, and says that he has a higher chance than me.

Subject test scores in the 700+ range can help at the UC’s and yes HS course rigor will definitely help your chances. Schools especially UC’s which will accept a 3.7-3.8 GPA UW applicant with a rigorous HS schedule over a student with regular classes at a 4.0 UW.

If you look at the common dataset’s for the UC’s and CSU’s, HS course rigor is considered very important.

My first choice is SLO, how can I achieve this, as you stated it was a high reach :(.

Me thinks UCR and UCM are your best shots at the UCs. SLO is pretty unlikely - so, add a couple of CSUs. SDSU, Long Beach and CPP are all worth a look. If you want to stay in N Cal, Chico is worth a tour.

Good luck.

If you are applying to SLO for CS, there is no way to increase your chances since your GPA is what it is at this point. Increasing your SAT scores can help your chances somewhat but your stats are still considerably below the averages for the College of Engineering. You should consider SE (which is still a tough admit) instead of CS.

This is the Freshman profile stats for this years in-coming Freshman in the College of Engineering. If you want to be competitive, you need stats at or above the averages posted . CS has about a 9% acceptance rate while SE has about a 30% acceptance rate.

Average CP GPA: 4.16 ACT: 32 SAT: 1467

Yeah, all of the colleges above I’m actually applying to SE, sorry for the misunderstanding

Only SJSU/SLO and UCI offer Software Engineering. The rest offer Computer science.

should I submitted a 610 Math 2 and a 580 Physics?

*submit

UC’s consider SAT II scores and those will not help your chances.
You need some solid Safety and Match schools on your list so I would say add UC Merced unless you are ELC eligible, CSU Fullerton and your local CSU as a safety. You need to apply widely and focus more on the Cal states.
