Essays are really good, and I sent in Michigan 2 weeks ago. Thanks so much, this really calms me down!

Wow, if your school is ranked like you say it is you should easily get into UMichigan, they'd be fools to not accept you, you have a 100% at your safety and targets, and you would get into Texas, however Northwestern would be pushing it. I say you have a 30-40% at Northwestern. Nonetheless, still apply because you fit the median scores. However, I would not recommend you to go out of state since UMichigan is 39K an year for out of state, Northwestern is 44K(and also a quarter grading system meaning taking 4 finals, translating to massive stress on doing well on each assignment given), if i were you i would go to Texas at Austin, a state school for you which would be cheap and still be prestigious. A renowned college professor told me that kids worry too much about going to top notch schools. THose that get in usually burn out due to intense competition and stress. She advised me to stick to a state school, however if you went there, you had to shine and do really well, you would not have so much stress and competition and be able to get into better grad. programs or better job opportunities.

The Newsweek list actually excludes all extremely competitive high schools. No privates, no magnets. A 28 ACT is not the average at even a marginally competitive school.

Thanks for the info.....anyone else?

Wow, you're in at all those places, including NU for sure. You live in Texas, have you considered Rice?

Actually I have considered Rice. My geology teacher can very easily get me in there considering the admissions direcotr of the program is her cousin. But I toured it and it doesnt seem right for me. I want a college with a big sport atmosphere, and I want out of Houston.

80? You're in anywhere, cousins or no cousins. Are you serious? Someone should forward this to Rice admissions. You're a bit confused about college admissions on a number of fronts Weil.

Ya my school is ridic smart

First question concerns your choice of schools:

Sorry, but I've never heard of University of Illinois--Bloomington. Either you mean University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana--or you mean Indiana University at Bloomington. Doesn't really matter because you should get into either place.

As far as the others, your scores as an in-state student will hurt you at Texas since you are not in the top 10% of students statewide. I doubt therefore if you can get in without this--since the 19% level doesn't impress for the state universities, despite your school being highly ranked.

Your UW GPA is 3.697, and your ACT of 31 (SAT of 690/690/690) is actually slightly low for Rice, which has a UW GPA average of 3.75 or so with a average ACT of 32 (SAT average of 2160). So you are a slight reach there. A good essay and great recommendations, coupled with your hometown status might help you overcome the obstacles.

Now, let's talk Northwestern. Rice is the 10th toughest school to get into per USNW and Northwestern ranks 19th (tied with John Hopkins). They both are ranked as 98 by the Princeton Review. In my opinion, you are a match to slight reach there--meaning you have a better chance than at Rice, but your chances are right around 50-50.

Your chances at the rest:
Michigan-Ann Arbor--match
University of Wisconsin-Madison--match
University of Washington-Seattle--safe match to match
University of Arizona--safety

Thanks for your comments...I meant University of Illinois-Champaign

@ suze
Actually, Newsweek includes magnet schools. A few of the top 10 schools, including the #1 school, are public magnet schools.

Sorry for not directly commenting on your chances Weil, since I don't think I'm in any position to judge where one will be accepted since I'm still in the middle of the application process myself. Just wanted to say that about the Newsweek list.

and my school is a magnet school

Thjey don't count the strong magnets, TJ, Stuy, Bx Sci etc.

Thanks for the info

Anyone else?

@bobby100
What do you mean strong magnets? Looking at the list, particularly at the Talented and Gifted Magnet, with a Selection Index of 14, I'd say that the list includes strong magnets.

Read what Newsweek itself says about the list. They do not include very selective magnets. Then they exclude every private school and let's face it, those are the best schools in the Country. Other than schools like TJ, there is no public school that has SAT averages anywhere near the top privates in every American city.
