Bowdoin
WashU
Vanderbilt
UVA

input...please

I not really the expert on these things, but it seems to me that your ec's might be a bit weak for the harder schools on your list like Yale and Dartmouth etc. but its nothing way too troublesome, your test scores and gpa definately keep you in the running

what counts as the hard ones....

bump bump bump

bump bump bump

Yale EA-- reach
Cornell-- slight reach
UPenn-- slight reach-reach
Brown-- reach
Dartmouth-- reach
Williams-- reach
Middlebury-- slight reach-reach
Amherst (legacy)-- slight reach
Bowdoin-- high match
WashU-- reach
Vanderbilt-- high match
UVA-- assuming OOS, slight reach

You need outstanding ECs for the Ivies and top LACs...nothing makes you stand out at all.

tahnks for the tip - i guess im looking at bowdoin then.......

i'm not sure about the previous poster's opinions- we all have different ideas on here about how difficult certain schools will be to get into. my take is less dire, although i agree that your weakness is obviously your ECs.

i think the difficult ivies will be reaches for you as they are for 99% of students applying to them. yale, brown, etc. i would include upenn here as they have become exceedingly more selective in the past few years. i would also say, as an out of state applicant to UVA, you have a tough case to make. UVA is not exceptionally selective in-state (with your stats, you'd be in), but their standards are stratospheric for out of state applicants.

you have a better shot, although not a guarantee, at cornell and i would say dartmouth. although dartmouth is typically a difficult ivy, your profile fits the students who go to dartmouth in the run of cases more than it does, say, the students who go to yale. williams and amherst fall into this category as well. your scores are fine, as are your grades, but they tend to look for something more. your legacy status at amherst will help.

your chances at bowdoin and middlebury are slightly better than at williams and amherst only because b and m are slightly less selective. still, my caveat about the LACs is this: because they're all such small schools, your being admitted on the numbers may be less likely than your being admitted on your essay, say, or volunteerism. therefore, bowdoin and middlebury may ultimately prove less reliable than larger, excellent schools like cornell or washu, who may admit you because of your numbers.

vanderbuilt, i think is your best bet, since you are signficantly above their averages for scores. and it's a wonderful school, albeit a very different environment than the other schools on your list.

ultimately i think:

vanderbuilt - match

bowdoin - high match
middlebury - high match
cornell - high match
amherst - high match (because of legacy)
washu - high match

williams - slight reach
dartmouth - slight reach

yale - reach
brown - reach
UVA - reach
UPenn - reach

thrown in a safety school or two and you'll be fine. i think this list is a list of strong matches to low reaches.

good luck

i dont have any safteys but Texas....

bump nbjda fadfdas

help me bump

HYPSM is a reach for ANYBODY not hooked, as are, to a lesser degree, the other Ivies and comparables. So what if the OP's ECs aren't stellar? They're solid, and past that, everything is a crapshoot, albeit with something of a fixed dice.

You must have heard from Yale.

yeah i got deffered from yale :(

BUMP bump Bump

I know someone who got deferred from Yale and for 30 straight days sent in a paragraph why he wanted to go to yale. eventually he was accepted. try it.

wait what - explain tushar

Stats wise, you are fine. If a college rejects you, it will only be because of other factors.

Personally, I think your EC's are good. You show some serious dedication to Lacrosse -- and FYI, colleges do consider stuff like spirit and leadership awards in ECs. Being co-captain of your club soccer will help too, and work at the science museum is always cool too. Freshman mentor shows you care about others. And, you have done community service.

To me, honestly, you don't NEED anything else with your EC's AS LONG AS you can truly show yourself with your essays. And by that I mean make yourself unique, reflect who you are as an individual.

By no meands do you have to be the national champ of whatever in order to get into an Ivy or the equivalent of one. You just need to be real, a hard worker, and show passion, leadership, dedication, and citizenship, and possibly diversity.

So, all of that said...

Yale EA - Reach. Nothing to do with you, just that it's a reach for everyone. And do NOT give up just because you were deferred...send letters, be proactive about it. If it truly is the school you want to go to, you should try your hardest to get in.

Cornell, UPenn, Brown, WashU, Dartmouth, Williams - High Match/Match. You make a very good case for places like these, and if you write good essays and get good recs, I would not be surprised if you get into one of them.

Amherst, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Vanderbilt - Match. Your legacy at Amherst makes you a good candidate for the school, while the others are more at your level.

UVA - Safety. Especially if you are in state. If you are out of state, you might want to look for a true safety, like the college of William and Mary. That seems to fit with the types of schools you're looking at.

Overall, you're a strong candidate. Do realize, the only schools you are a true "in" for are the safeties...the matches might even reject you.

my only saftery is texas (im out of state)
