Research Intern at the National Institute of Health this summer with National Cancer Institute

Although no one can really say anything about the Ivies (especially HYP) I think you have a great chance at all of the schools you listed. You seem to have the grades, ECs, and test scores.

One question though, I was also interested in trying for the NIH summer internship...and I was wondering how exactly you got in? Did you just fill out an application and based on your test scores and grades they accepted you? Or did you have to write an essay? It would be nice if you would let me know. Thanks and good luck with the colleges.

It is too late to apply for this summer as most spots are already filled but I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to do it for next year!

The application site becomes available in about November, I believe.

Go to http://www.training.nih.gov/student/sip/ and form an application. You don't write an "essay" but you have a "cover letter" which is basically you explaining why they should pick you. Next you need to search on NIH for the labs you want to work in. I really wanted NCI so I contacted a couple scientists from NCI and emailed them. About 10% of them will actually email you back. Of that 10%, 9% are "NOs" but if you get lucky a couple scientists will be willing to take you on. Then they'll search through the system for your application and read through it. If they like you, they'll pick you.

You've got a decent chance of getting into HYPSM and Brown. Like the other poster said, you never know with those schools. Your class rank really helps though and I think you can get into at least one of those schools, probably even more.
- Georgetown match
- Johns Hopkins match
- Duke match

Other possibilities
- Northwestern safety
- Cornell slight reach (another school that's hard to judge)
- Penn match
- WUSTL safety

bumppppp anyone else?

ummm you have awesome grades, an awesome gpa, excellent sat scores but few ecs..............other than that you are good.

Brown is super hard to get into. AND you have to get into Brown (who are pickier about individuals than other schools) before you can be considered for PLME.

Just a heads up.

You have a great chance, but if you have those stats you shouldn't even ask to be chanced.

yeah i agree that you have excellent credentials, but you cant really talk about 'chances' at any of the HYPSM level schools. No one is safe at that level anymore. no matter what your grades and ec's are, you're taking a crap shoot at those schools. Duke, Penn, and the schools on the level right below those, however, i think its safe to say you have good chances.

bump......

Thanks so much for letting me know about the NIH internship. I will definitely apply next year, and hopefully I will get something.

bumpppppppp

can anyone else comment?

you should just really bring out your strong leadership skills and role in the helping the community. besides that, i envy your scores! i guess just play out your passion for something, which is probably leadership in your case.
i think you definitely have a chance...i'm applyin for hyps next year too. take a look at my chances thread:honest suggestions for hyps. also, what's your ethnicity?

Asian so no help there

bumpppppppppppp

I'm not sure what to say (perhaps a bit scared), considering I'll be applying to the exact same things next year and your resume looks almost just like mine, except that I didn't get into NIH, and I didn't get elected this year.

One thing that you probably should do (since you're applying to PLME) is go talk to the PLME director. She's really nice, and you get to find out that, for instance, 3/4's of those in that program are women. Plus you may/may not get some insider.

The only thing that you don't really demonstrate is a passion for medicine. I do research at school and at home, and I concentrate heavily on medicinal areas in and out of school for this. If you can, I suggest taking whatever project you work on at NIH and bring it to Intel STS. If you get really nice, you can use your paper and give it to the admissions peoples. 33% of all admitted to PLME did research, so it's probably a good idea.

Also, be sure to put your volunteer work up. That's very important.

Don't forget though that essays and interviews are very, very, important. My dad's friend told me about two kids whom applied to Harvard. One had better grades and scores than the other, and yet the one with inferior stats got in, because his essay and interview was ridiculous.

Well, hopefully, I'll get to see you at Brown.

bumpppppppppp why so few responses?

bumppppppp
