Something to think seriously about…if you need financial aid, UC schools will only give you $9,000 a year if you are out of state. Tuition, room and board for out of staters at Berkely is $42K. It came down to Berkely and another school on the East Coast where my sister got $20K in financial aid…that made the difference. Think about it.

^Wow, there’s an edit button for a reason xD

Anyways, ECs will affect you, and in the scenario you listed its likely that person B would be accepted depending on how good his ECs really are. In reality, in state they’d both probably be accepted. How much ECs can boost you in a public school is probably not going to be as much as a private. If a competitive GPA to get into UCLA is hypothetically a 4.1, then having stellar ECs (someone floats the idea often that UCLA likes accepting ASB presidents) might give you maybe .2 or .3 GPA forgiveness conservatively speaking, with the rest relying on your SATs to bring up. However, you can’t expect EC’s to give you more than that in terms of lower GPA leeway. Test scores probably factor in much more than ECs in the case of public schools though, and as such if you had the choice between developing a healthy EC list to a stellar one as opposed to bumping a mediocre SAT score to a higher one, I’d be more inclined to do the latter.

Ah yes, and there is a grim reality to actually being able to secure financial independence and then being able to apply for in-state tuition…

I just took the SAT’s this morning and I hope I got at least 2100…>.<

Pepper you talked a lot about EC’s. but how about the personal statement?

Also bump for relevancy +++ presence on board

Again, public university will entail a lot of number crunching. In my opinion, PS comes into play only if you have to address a deficiency in your SATs/GPA that isn’t readily apparent to the reader. For instance, if some major event occurred in sophomore year and your grades took a precipitous drop, then there would be relevance to your admissions if you could iterate that. I’m basing this off the UCSD points system, but I would hope that LA and Berkeley pay more attention to the PS, especially the part about something unique about you. While I wouldn’t necessarily think that, barring the situation I mentioned above, it would forgive a significantly lower SAT/GPA, it might be that final straw that could make or break someone’s chances.

Essays:
I talked about maturity. I did shoplifting during the first semester of my sohpomore year. I was a really bad student who had no visions of future and was completely aimless, which is the reason for my horrible grades in my first 2 years of highschool. And as you may notice, most of my extracurriculars happened during my Junior and Senior year. Anyways, on the essay, I talked about how I realized all the negative effects that I had caused in my society, so I confessed my burglary actions and paid back everything I stole. As the result, my school principle gave me very minor punishments. I also focused a lot on how I changed my direction from the old me, and actually started setting goals for myself, trying in school, and repaying the society.

Thanks!
