Chance me please??

Hey all, I applied RD to Cornell, and am getting nervous about it so am hoping for some chances so I'm not shocked come April!

Status: International, not asking for financial aid

Stats:
SAT I: 2150 (CR:710, M:770, W:670)

SAT II: Math I: 730
Literature: 710
French: 630 (:S)

ACT: 33 Composite (E:34, M:34, R:33, S:31), Writing Subscore: 10

(I sent both my ACT and SAT score in.)

GPA (this is where it gets bad): 4.35 (out of 4.67) in senior year, but cumulatively 3.6... I had moved schools in my junior year and my grades really really suffered as a result. I explained this in additional info, and my counsellor tried to explain this in her rec but the drop still looks bad. Our school doesn't rank (thankfully).

IB: I take the IB diploma, with an extra subject. I did 2 exams last year and got a 7 and 5 in them (SL Math and Chem), predicted 42/45 points total. I take pretty much the hardest course load possible, have never had more than one free period (this is unusual in my school).

ECs:
MUN
Violin (Orchestra)
Varsity Tennis
Varsity X-Country
(all 4 years, all taken to highest level in school (regional representation), got varsity letters for all)

Key Club
(3 years, Vice President)

Student Government
(Public Relations Officer)

Work Experience/Big Volunteer Stuff:
Interned at a top law firm (1 month)
Interned at a daily newspaper (1 month)
Interned at a research lab (in Sarawak) (2 weeks)
Volunteered as teacher's aide at a deaf school (2 months)

Recs and Essays:
One rec was outstanding, the other one pretty good. My essays were okay, I think :)

Hook:
I've moved to 11 schools/countries all over the world (my dad's a diplomat), so I have the 'hook' of diversity, I guess, I've tried to play up on it in my essays. I'm currently at an American school in Indonesia, it's one of the top international schools.

Please be honest! Thanks :)

Definite reject in my opinion. But im only a teenager, so why's my opinion matter. In fact, i might've only said that cause i want the spot that you might take. Who knows :-p

Um, thanks? Haha I don't know to what extent you were being sarcastic, but thanks anyway :P

SAT IIs are a bit average, you might be able to make up for the slightly low GPA with some cracking essays though.

cheers.

yaxley, which school in Indo do you go to? I live in Indonesia too..
Also, you have a great shot, as you don't require any aid

What? Isn't Cornell.......................

Cornell = Almost 0 aid for Intls.

Hey I think you have a good chance. Which college are you applying to though?

Also, message me if you went to IASAS X.... we might know each other?

I'd suggest you to mabe think of a specific scene of your life that's unique about you rather than a "I am a diverse kid who lived all over the world blahblhb" essay because that often repeats itself year after year....

what I meant by not applying for financial aid was that he would be selected from a less competitive pool, as most intels require fin aid.
And even without that, I think he is a strong applicant.

Does not applying for financial aid have any effect on admissions for students from the US?

No, it doesn't. For US kids, it's Need-Blind. Here's what Cornell Admission Site says:

[quote]
"In keeping with Ezra Cornell's vision, the university practices "need-blind" admission. Your ability to pay has no bearing on whether you are admitted. For eligible students, Cornell tries to provide a predictable aid package throughout the years of college."

International students, however, is a whole different story.

As for the OP, I think you have a great shot, but I can't guarantee anything since I don't know how the International process goes. I'm sure they consider diplomats' sons/daughters to be quite important considering their duties to the country. But, I don't know. GoodLuck!

yaxley do you go to the jakarta international school? I used to live in jakarta too and i have a few friends in JIS...i can guarantee you that you'll get into cornell, cuz of the diversity hook and the fact that you'ds nat asking for aid....didnt 2 kids from JIS get into Yale ED this year and some kids got deferred from U Penn? JIS has a good reputation with the Ivys and im 100% sure u'll get in

Thanks for the encouragement/ advice everyone, I really just wanted an honest prediction of my chances. I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences (for an English major). For those who asked, no I don't go to JIS (and I'm a bit reluctant to post my school on here), but we've had a lot of kids go to Ivies in the past from our school. Also, Kumara, I'm a girl :P

oh, my bad.. sorry
