Hi! I really want to go to MIT or Harvard, but I'm also applying to Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Chicago, UPenn, Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Rice (yeah, I'm still not sure what I want to do yet...) How are my chances? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Other:
Recs should be very good.
Essays should be decent but not great.

Thanks!

Wow, good job on the 800 in CR + Math!

I think Chicago and Duke, you would have no problem getting in
As for Johns Hopkins, I think it's a strong match ?

Because of Siemens and USNCO, you have a GREAT chance at MIT. Probably an above average chance at HYPS, but it's good your top choice is MIT because I think you also have the best chance of getting in there.

You have great stats. SAT is wonderful, and GPA is marvelous.
Good job on National Merit Scholar, and your honors/awards are pretty good.
However, your EC's are a bit on the bland side (club, Science Olympiad, and AcaDeca). It's not that they're not good, just that they may be a bit overused.
Just as your volunteer work is (except for the lab stuff).
Nonetheless, you still have very, very good statistics, and you are in the top tier of applicants. I have seen better, but those are the superstars, the 2350 + 4.0/4.6 + novelist/3 varsity sports/created 3 clubs, etc.

MIT - slight reach/match
Harvard - slight reach/match
Yale - slight reach/match
Princeton - slight reach/match
Stanford - match
Chicago - match
UPenn - match
Duke - match
Johns Hopkins - match
Rice - match

I just can't put you down for slight reach, because it doesn't seem like a reach for you. But no one is really a match for Ivies anymore =(

Good luck!

If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you chanced me =)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/601962-asian-actor-ivies-stanf-uc-s-usc.html#post1061319679

well i won't chance you using the reach/match/safety system because i realise it doesn't really do what you want it to do (reassure you). i'm guessing you're in at 1 (and if you're lucky, 2) of HYMPS.

if you're essays are "decent not great", then probably no chicago for you. but chicago lives in a 1600-SAT world so with your "perfect score" and good GPA/ECs, you're still competitive.

Rice/JHU i'll be bold and say you're in while for Duke I'm not sure if it's currently looking more like a reject or an accept (probably an accept though). I guess for Duke it comes down (in your case) to the essays/recs?

thanks! and bump

10charbump

btw, out of hypms, which ones look a lot into leadership?

bbuummppss

You can relax now, you'll clearly get into several.

While you have stellar credentials, you seem almost robotic in how you describe yourself; that may be because you don't know what you want to study yet? If you have two or three preferences in a college major, begin there, think about it and really sell yourself in your essays, while making sure your recs are from teachers who adore you as the best student ever!

With your numbers, you will probably be an automatic admit at perhaps half of the best schools. If so, make them SELL you next April on why you should choose them!

So would you recommend essays about my personal characteristics or about my interests?

HYPS - slight reach. Good of a chance as anybody.
MIT - match - slight reach. I think you are getting in here though.
Chicago - match
UPenn - match
Duke - match
Johns Hopkins - match
Rice - match

Really nice stats. You will get into at least one of HYPS and most likely get into MIT

humpdebump

you have no safeties. while i can see why you may not need one (because you'll be in at atleast one, unless you have an epic screw up somewhere), it can never hurt to have one teeny weeny safety right? you don't even have to spend much time on it anyway. and since you don't have anything about financial aid here, i'm assuming you won't mind paying a bit more to apply to one safety.

i know some might tell me that you're golden as you are for more than one of those schools but after reading some failure stories on these forums, you can never be too safe so please consider one safety.

oh yeah, whoops, i forgot to list purdue

Whoa, I have almost the exact same choices of college and almost the exact same stats.
Except mine is a little weaker I think, haha.

I only have R: 750, M: 800, and W: 710 on the SAT
I don't have the Siemens or chem competition thing, but I do run cross country, and we did win our state championship this year.

I was just very amazed at how similar we are, based on my inference of your post. Just wondering, are you a guy or a girl?

Haha, sweet. I'm a guy btw.
Good luck on your apps. Sounds like this year's gonna be really competitive :.

bumppppppp
