Chance me please!!!!

i go to SMC and am planning on transferring to UCI or UCSB as a junior in fall 2010 (3 years total at SMC).. my gpa is 3.27 with 1 repeat (i failed stats the first time but got a C the 2nd time) and 1 W.. i have a few EC's (nothing special).. i am majoring in sociology..i will have completed IGETC and all the prerequisites for both schools prior to transfer.. so... how are my chances for both schools and can you also give me a minimum gpa score that has a solid chance at those schools?
also 1 more thing.. i am korean, will the schools look down on the fact that i got 10 units worth of A's from taking Korean 1 and 2?
thanks in advanced

Lol I go to SMC too, why did you spend 3 years here?
If you have 60 UC transferable units and a 4.0 in your pre-reqs, it would be somewhat of a reach for you. The safety mark for UCI and UCSB seems to be around 3.5 . You are applying in fall 09 I presume? I’d say apply to UCR, UCM, and UCSC also.

Consider the transfer agreements for UCI and UCSB

What GPA are you expecting in this upcoming year.

if you pull your gpa up to 3.4 you should have a solid admission to atleast one of those two if not both.

No they will not look down on a Korean taking Korean.

I took 20 units of Russian and I am Russian.

What are you talking about? UCI is a reach with a 4.0 pre-req GPA? If you don’t know what you’re talking about, don’t feel forced to contribute. Also, why would you presume this applicant to be for Fall 09? The OP explicit stated that s/he is applying for Fall 2010.

kimdavid04- Like Malishka said, if you can bring your GPA up a little more, you should be good to go.

He explicitly stated “planning on transferring to UCI or UCSB as a junior in fall 2010”. What does that mean? It means hes applying Fall 2009 to become an admit for Fall 2010.
He never stated if he had a 4.0 PRE REQ GPA. If you look at his GPA, you would see that he most likely did not have a 4.0 pre-req gpa. I said it was SOMEWHAT of a reach with a 3.21 overall gpa, sure if he had a 4.0 pre-req gpa then it would be a match.

“I said it was SOMEWHAT of a reach with a 3.21 overall gpa”.

Sephorazn18 you did not say that in your previous post. You need to tone down your internet tough guy approach.
“I said it was SOMEWHAT of a reach with a 3.21 overall gpa”.

can someone give me a % of my chances assuming the stated gpa of 3.24 (ignore the 3.27 above)

relax, fooldawg.
if you had done a simple google search, you might have found this:

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/)

i think your chances are okay to good

…and don’t pay any attention to what some are saying. Like other posters on here have said, these people talking through their hat!!

I’ve done boatloads of research on this subject, and the only UCs that are really hard to predict are UCLA and UC-Berkeley (even if you have a GREAT gpa). If you have a lower gpa UCSD might be a slightly tough one to get into (because they go more so by gpa, and don’t consider ECs for the most part-good for someone like me  …but unfortunately I’m not interested in UCSD :frowning: )

However, in your case I can confidently say you have over a 90% chance of getting in to UCI or UCSB. Here’s why:

First off, sociology is not a very competitive major like say engineering, biz/econ or bio
Secondly, contrary to what people keep saying, 3.27 (or 3.24) is not a bad gpa. It’s a fairly good gpa. Again the term “good” is relative. For UCLA and UCB (and possibly UCSD) it might not be a competitive gpa, but certainly for UCI and UCSB it’s perfectly acceptable!

Third, and most important of all for the UCs, you have completed ALL of your pre-reqs and IGETC!!! This gives you a huge leg up over others who may be missing many courses!

Take Malishka’s advise and join the Transfer-agreement programs, and you should have nothing to worry about!

If you still need some peace of mind, check out the stats website posted by pinkerfloyd and see the number of people with 2.8s etc. who have gotten in!!!

Woah, there’s still plenty of time for improvement. You’ve got a whole year ahead of you, make the best of it.

dude if i spent 2 years at a CC and was aiming for a 2nd-tier UC, i would totally sign TAGs. don’t know why people dont think about that beforehand…

just do that and you’ll be solid. there really isnt any need for a “chance me” thread for 2nd-tier UC’s when you can easily just sign a TAG.

thanks everyone
