ECs: choir, school and community orchestra, marching band, piano (competitions, solo festivals, etc.), drama club, FIRST Robotics team, debate treasurer, NHS, SNHS, Interact

Yes definitely apply. Make sure you let them know how much you want to go to Rice. Use the “Why Rice” (or whatever it is now) to get their attention.

Although they do not look at PSAT scores, yours will most likely make you a NMS, which is something they do consider. The number of EC’s does not matter. The commitment that you make to one or two is much more important. FIRST is great if you are very involved and considering engineering. Your test scores compare well. If you apply ED you should have an excellent chance.

@Ellex: Definitely apply. Your chances are decent. Make it clear what activities that you are truly committed to; Rice, like other elite universities, don’t want to see a laundry list of activities. Definitely take advantage of the “Why Rice?” and “How will you contribute to Rice?” essays to help you in the admissions process.

@hmmmmmmm: It appears the APs that the OP listed is from his/her junior year and includes the ones he/she is going to take senior year. You usually can’t take English Lit and English Lang the same year. Generally, AP English Language is taken junior year, and AP English Literature is generally taken senior year. Plus, it would be crazy to take AP Bio, AP Calc, AP Chem, and AP Physics all in the same year. Ellex, correct me if I am wrong with my assumptions.

That may be the way lots of people do it, but not here. Our schools do not teach an AP lang course. That doesn’t stop people taking the exam. For example S took an AP lit class as a senior and took both AP lang and lit exams. He did better on the lang exam (got a 5) with minimal self study (buying an AP test book and taking a couple of practice exams). If you’ve had good English classes throughout your HS career you should be well prepared for the AP lang test.

That’s how my school does it too, only offering the AP Lit class. Interestingly enough, all the people I know who took both Lit and Lang got Lang scores >= Lit.

slik nik: Thanks for your opinion. You’re right; the APs listed include my senior curriculum, as well as AP Computer Science, which I forgot to add.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I’m actually not going to apply ED, I decided I might apply for the UT Austin Honors Program instead.
