Chance Me Please!

I am going to be a senior next year, I am worried about where I might end up. So please help me out to get an idea of where I stand. Well here it is…

Ethnicity/Sex: Indian Male

State: CA

Parent’s Income: My parents BOTH lost their jobs this year, most of my junior year was on my parents savings and unemployment. My mom recently got her job back, my dad just got his as well; he works in Boston now, and now I am living with my mom and my brother. But, as I said before, they both lost their jobs this year; which was my worst year GPA wise (If that helps at all). When they both have a job, I think they make around 100k-130k.

UW GPA: 3.417
UC GPA: 3.65ish
W GPA: 3.7ish

=(

Class Rank: 70-80/ 515 Top 20% for sure, UC wise, maybe top 10%?

SAT: 2050
Math: 680 =/
Writing: 680
Reading: 690

SAT 2:
Math: 670. (Retaking aiming for 800)
History: 630
Chem: In Oct. (Going for 800)

AP/HON:

My courses have been very rigorous. I have taken 3 or 4 Hon/AP out of 6 classes every year. We cant take AP classes till our Junior year… So, One AP Junior year, 4 next year. Total Hon/ AP classes: 14

USH: 3
Calc AB: Next Year
Stats: Next Year
Gov: Next Year
Ecom: Next Year

EC’S:

Summer Classes:

Took Psychology at a CC my Sophomore summer and got an A

This Summer, I am taking Chem 1A at UC Berkeley through the pre-collegiate program. It is a Undergrad class offered for High school students with a better then a B average. My parents had to bust out a lot of money for this, they insisted I go here, instead of a CC. Its basically a Berkeley class, you get 4 UC credits, a Letter of Recommendation and so on. Hoping to do well in this and get an 800 on Chem SAT.

Clubs:

Mediocre here… CSF 3 years.

Volunteering:

I have worked at a local community center for a program called Teen Leadership Academy. They say working there is as good as being on ASB, Boy Scouts, etc…

Freshman Summer: 88 hours
Sophomore Summer: 80 Hours
Junior Summer: I hope to do 40+ hours, will have to try to do this with my summer class.

I tutored math at my school for 30 hours my Junior year, 2 hours a week through the course of the year.

Total: Before summer: 198. After Summer: Prob will have 235-250.

Major: Engineering, any of these three will suffice: Electrical, Chemical, Bio.

I would like to go to a mid tier or high tier UC if possible.

Decent chance for Davis, high tiers may be reaches.

^High Tier: Cal, LA, and SD? Do I have a decent chance at SD?

Also, what do you mean decent chance at Davis? Expand please.

Thank You!

Any one else?

You will probably get into Davis.

SD may be a bit of a reach (but not too hard if you fill out app smartly).

For UCLA and Cal, I would retake SAT for a 2100+ to make up for GPA. If you get that, I’d say you have a reasonably good shot at getting into one of them.

^ The SAT score difference apparently doesn’t mean much, unless I can increase by 100 points. I already took it 3 times stupidly, Oct, failed horribly. Shouldn’t have done it in January, I studied over break, but with finals I was too stressed that I wasn’t ready and I panicked. I took it in March with no study and raised it 210 points from Jan. Made stupid mistakes for Math, or would have been like 40-50 points higher.

Either way, I do not have the concentration or time to study this summer with the Berkeley class and Community service.

Also, I think it would probably be better to go for 2 800’s or high 700’s on my subject tests, then raise my Reasoning by 50 points.

My GPA was about the same as yours, my SAT scores a bit lower, and my course history was less impressive than yours, and I’m going to NYU! Moral of the story. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not qualified. My counselor did and I’m glad I didn’t listen to her. As far as UCs, I didn’t apply to LA, Cal or Davis because I didn’t want to go there, but I did apply to UCSD, UCSC & UCI. Acceptance letters from all three. Not only accepted but offered about 90% of the tuition in scholarships and grants.

Regarding income, if you qualify, you can apply for application fee waivers. You’ll get 4 for UCs and 4 for CSUs. Privates offer fee waivers as well. File your fafsa with time to spare and apply for every scholarship you can find. Fill your college app out carefully and don’t leave anything out even if you think it’s not important, ie: community service, odd jobs, extra curricular activities, etc. I had a lemonade stand and raised $600 for Hurricane Katrina Victims! They love to see consistency and commitment. Is there any organization or sport you have been involved with for a majority of your years in school? If so, definitely emphasize that. Anything that would require you to display self-discipline as well as excellent organizational skills.

Hope that helped. Hope it made sense as well. It’s late and I’m tired!

Wow thats awesome! Good Job!

Thanks for the helpful answer. As far as being consistent, I have worked at the same place for 3 years for 200+ hours.

As for financial aid. Does it make it harder to get in, if you apply for it?

^Question!

And more opinions!

I have my question answered.

But, please more opinions and chances!

I really would like to get accepted to Davis! I am wreck right now and I probably will be till the acceptance letters come in. I am sure I will get into a UC, but I would at least like to go to a mid-tier UC and getting into Davis would be a accomplishment and a sigh of relief!

Please keep chancing!

bump 10 char!

Someone, please?

Chance me with this please!

[ucd score](http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pKB1yD5iQn_89XJagnVWmIQ&gid=0)

GPA and SAT’S (Max points prob) : 7270
44 courses (9 beyond requirement): 450
Academic Program (If mine gives me the full points) : 500

If I got even some of the points for Academic program, I will be good.

You probably won’t make it for bioengineering at SD. It’s the best in the state for sure, even better than cal. As far as Davis is concerned, you should be fine. I would apply under whichever you feel you will like more. With Cal and LA, I hate to say it, but you have a low chance of getting in. It’ll be a high reach.

^Thank you for a reply!

Yes I know Cal and LA are miracles. SD is prob a reach; for any of these I probably would only get in Undecided anyway.

With all the budget cuts and admission stories I have been having college panic attacks for the past few weeks. I would be REALLY happy if I got into Davis, Irvine, SB. After those, I will feel safe and won’t care as much if I don’t get into Cal or LA. SD would still be nice.

Also does Davis work like SD as well,

Where there is a cutoff for major #1, then major #2 and if you don’t get into either, they give you admission undecided.

chances…

hope this helps. I got in SD, SB, D, SC (and requested supplements from UCB and UCLA–not too sure what triggers them though) with 3.37 UC GPA and 1900 SAT.
write a spectacular personal statement! itll help a lot! Make colleges beg you to attend them with it! I wrote mine over many many many many times to perfect them. GL :)

I love what PeaceofLove said :]
Don’t let counselors discourage you.

^Oh wow congrats!

Where did you decide to go? You must have had a hella of an essay. =)

Can someone still answer the major question?

i think you have a good chance for davis
you can write about your parents losing their jobs in your personal statement and how that effected your grades…mayb you helpd them by also working, therefore, your grades went down? IF you live by davis you can say…my parents dont have the money to send me far away(that worked for my friend who applied and got accepted)

make sure you revise your personal statement many times and have teachers or other people review it and start on it EARLY! and try making it orginal and talk bout hardships you went through

I hope to start it Friday, because my class ends Thursday. I have been thinking about it, but I haven’t wrote anything yet.

Thanks for the chance!

Weak GPA. Decent test scores. 5 AP classes, which is decent. Extremely weak extracurriculars, but it doesn’t matter since the lower-tier UCs don’t really look at that. Nice volunteer work (brownie points for you!), though I venture to ask why you didn’t volunteer during the school year. Won’t matter on the app, though, if my memory serves me correctly.

You have a shot. I would try to get that GPA a little bit higher, if at all possible.
As for the upper-tier: UCSD, UCLA, UCB? UCSD, probably won’t get in for engineering. Choose another major, perhaps? Slight reach.
UCLA/UCB: Reach, reach, reach. Sowwi! ^^; Your lack of extracurriculars is why it’s weak.

Definitely work on those essays, because you’ll need to -really- explain why your GPA dropped so much your junior year. Your situation is not unique, especially with the current economy. :/
