Chance Me Please!

I am going to be a senior next year, I am worried about where I might end up. So please help me out to get an idea of where I stand. Well here it is...

Ethnicity/Sex: Indian Male

State: CA

Parent's Income: My parents BOTH lost their jobs this year, most of my junior year was on my parents savings and unemployment. My mom recently got her job back, my dad just got his as well; he works in Boston now, and now I am living with my mom and my brother. But, as I said before, they both lost their jobs this year; which was my worst year GPA wise (If that helps at all). When they both have a job, I think they make around 100k-130k.

UW GPA: 3.417
UC GPA: 3.65ish
W GPA: 3.7ish

=(

Class Rank: 70-80/ 515 Top 20% for sure, UC wise, maybe top 10%?

SAT: 2050
Math: 680 =/
Writing: 680
Reading: 690

SAT 2:
Math: 670. (Retaking aiming for 800)
History: 630
Chem: In Oct. (Going for 800)

AP/HON:

My courses have been very rigorous. I have taken 3 or 4 Hon/AP out of 6 classes every year. We cant take AP classes till our Junior year... So, One AP Junior year, 4 next year. Total Hon/ AP classes: 14

USH: 3
Calc AB: Next Year
Stats: Next Year
Gov: Next Year
Ecom: Next Year

EC'S:

Summer Classes:

Took Psychology at a CC my Sophomore summer and got an A

This Summer, I am taking Chem 1A at UC Berkeley through the pre-collegiate program. It is a Undergrad class offered for High school students with a better then a B average. My parents had to bust out a lot of money for this, they insisted I go here, instead of a CC. Its basically a Berkeley class, you get 4 UC credits, a Letter of Recommendation and so on. Hoping to do well in this and get an 800 on Chem SAT.

Clubs:

Mediocre here... CSF 3 years.

Volunteering:

I have worked at a local community center for a program called Teen Leadership Academy. They say working there is as good as being on ASB, Boy Scouts,etc...

Freshman Summer: 88 hours
Sophomore Summer: 80 Hours
Junior Summer: I hope to do 40+ hours, will have to try to do this with my summer class.

I tutored math at my school for 30 hours my Junior year, 2 hours a week through the course of the year.

Total: Before summer: 198. After Summer: Prob will have 235-250.

Major: Engineering, any of these three will suffice: Electrical, Chemical, Bio.

I would like to go to a mid tier or high tier UC if possible.

Someone? 10char

I honestly don’t know much about the admittance to UCSB,
but I know the average gpa is 3.9ish.
Your SAT score is really good, I WISH I could break 2000 hah, and your senior schedule’s super strong.
You also have pretty good ECs, also nice community service hours :).
As you can probably tell, I’ve never chanced anyone before, bahaha, but from this I think you have a pretty good chance at UCSB:)

Thanks for the reply, my GPA sucks… could have easily been a 3.9-4.0 weighted, a handful of B+'s and crappy teachers.

More replies please!

Good standardized testings, decent community/EC. Lacking in GPA which is very important and your essays are unknown. I doubt you’d get into engineering, and you might not want to expect to get in. You’ve got a chance though, you’re at least competitive into different majors.

Thanks for honest opinion, I hate my GPA and I know it is the only thing holding me down. So, no Engineering major?

Well in my opinion, I have no right to tell you that you’d be rejected or accepted but I think you should apply to a humanities or “easier” major and get in first. Then you apply to the department of engineering after two years after GEs are completed. Its hard this way too, but if you have confidence in fixing your GPA in college, then you should follow this route. You should wait for more opinions. Best of luck to you.

^Thanks.

I will still apply for Engineering, if I don’t get in, I hope they accept me as undeclared at least.

Either way, I am shooting for SD and Davis, Cal and LA with a miracle essay (lol). So SB is more like another option.

Does SB work like SD as well?

Where… If I apply to my desired major and don’t get in, they will give me my second major, and if I don’t get in that they give me a undecided position.

Or will it effect my admission and will a denial to major be denial to school?

bump…

I have almost identical stats as you, except little worse SAT, but i’m going to have 7 AP’s total. I’m also an Indian Male lol. And from what I’ve heard/seen, I think your in for Davis, riverside, and santa cruz. 75-25 in for Irvine and SB. SD is a bit of a reach, and cal and LA are long-shots schools. Try applying to some private schools too. University of San Diego is beautiful as is USC.

Thanks for the chance. Yeah, I have privates in mind, USC, Purdue and BU are some I am thinking about. Not much about San Diego University, I will do some research on it; thanks for the suggestion.

I have 7 AP’s too I guess. Community College Psych (3 UC transferable Credits), Cal Chem (4 UC Credits). Then 5 AP’s.

Can anyone answer the question above? About the majors.

yea, USD is beautiful! I just had a retreat/camp there, it was great! And Purdue for engineering is terrific too, my dad went there and has a respectable job now.

And I’d love to know the answer to the question about majors too

SB doesn’t base your eligibility by major. If you are in, you are in, regardless of the major you applied for. At least that is what I have read.

^Really? How sure are you? They are ranked like 9 or 12 for Chemical and Electrical Engineering. So I am assuming its hard to get in there, but if you don’t get in; they still give you admission to the school and let you have an alternate major or undecided. Right?

It matters on the different colleges. The College of Letters and Science does not judge by major. The College of Engineering does, for the reason you are going into that college for Engineering and they wont just let anyone in, same goes for The College of Creative Studies.

As for the question if they will give you an undecided major if you don’t get into the College of Engineering, I am not completely sure.

I think this clears my question. =)

College of Engineering

Students are selected by major for all engineering and computer science majors. Only applicants with a solid background in advanced high school mathematics will be considered for admission to engineering. This includes high grades in all math courses through grade 11 and enrollment in pre-calculus or higher in grade 12. A student not selected for the first choice major will be reviewed for admission to a second choice major or undeclared major.

I saw the Average Stats as well…

Average GPA 3.80
Average Total SAT 1829
Average Math SAT 665

[Facts | UCSB College of Engineering](http://engineering.ucsb.edu/prospective_undergraduates/facts)

I think I basically have a High B average for my Math and Science classes, which are the most advanced offered. I am aiming for 800’s or at least 750+ on Math 2 and Chem; hopefully that makes up for my 680 Math SAT score.

Always helps to read the website.

dang I was really looking to get into engineering at UCSB. (3.5 UW GPA, 3.8 W, 2040 SAT I, 700 Math SAT II, 670 Physics SAT II). Kinda bummed now that I read that the engineering department is selective, because I’ve gotten a B in math(no more, no less) every quarter, of every year, in high school.

But you guys are sure that if I didn’t get accepted into engineering I’d still be considered as a valid candidate for another major or as an undeclared major? How hard would it be to transfer into engineering say if I tried getting some of the GE’s out of the way by taking summer classes next summer (the months before I attend), and then the following summer (end of freshman year)?

Was the math Advanced? I have too. It isn’t REALLY bad if you got B’s in your most advanced Math classes offered.

Also, if I were you I would retake the subject tests. Show them that you ARE better then your B’s by getting a high 700.
