the simple fact is that admissions for the class entering 2009 was much more competitive than ever before – they accepted approx 30% of applicants.

over the past several years applications have steadily risen, and acceptance rate has steadily declined and this trend was made even more pronounced this past year as a result of the economy – both in terms of more applicants seeking suny tuition and in terms of the school wanting to carefully control the size of the entering class (for fall 2008 they ended up with many more students than they’d expected and they were trying very hard to avoid that happening again).

i think it is way too early to tell how these trends will play out for this year. is the economy recovering enough that suny applications won’t continue to soar or are families going to be looking for affordable public schools even more? will the applicant pool and concerns about state budget cuts make admissions even more conservative?

so any advice given on a chances thread is going to be pure speculation. look back at the threads posted here when people were getting their admissions decisions this past spring to get some idea of what stats were accepted in the last go around – but that will give you only limited help in assessing your chances for this year.

apply, but make sure you have realistic safeties.

I had very similar stats to you and I got in EA. My SAT’s were the same score but not as equally distrubuted (I did much better on the CR than the math). My average was almost exactly the same unweighted. I think you have a decent chance assuming you keep your GPA up senior year.

Also, iamhere is right that this year will be really unpredictable.

Thanks for the replies guys
I’m currently in Staten Island Tech High School
I think it was in the 20s for national ranking last year
and around 32 for national ranking this year.

Again, it depends which school you’re applying to. If you applied to Harpur, you have a decent chance. If you’re applying to Watson, you’re in. If you’re applying to SOM, it’s a reach for you.
