I'm applying for business, do I have a shot?

we’re both applying to business

i have a little better gpa/act and ecs, but you have more aps and course rigor than me. i think we should both get in fairly well as long as one of those ecs makes for a good essay for you. business heavily weights essays.

I have a general idea of what my essay is going to be (a volunteer experience that I am still a part of). Hopefully we both make it.

I heard business was harder than the other schools (except engineering). Would it help if I applied early?

YES. Apply early by all means. It WILL improve your chances of getting in to business. I think your courseload is so strong that you’ll definitely get admitted. U of I cares a lot about courseload. I had a friend with 32, 3.6 UW and 9 APs get in, but he was in-state. If the ACT went up a point or two it would be a lock, but I wouldn’t worry about it. Apply early and I’d be really suprised if you didn’t get in.

Your GPA/rank and ACT already put you in business school’s range. HOWEVER, for business in particular there is full file review, essays are very important, ECs important, and having very high grades and test score does not assure admission. Next, the business school’s admission rate is now usually under 40%, lower than any other college. Its middle 50% range is lower than engineering but it is harder to get into than engineering (which college actually has one of the highest admit rates usually over 70%). In other words make your essays count.

Also, about applying early via the priority date. It helps only a tad for business but should still be done. Business likes to make most decisons after it has seen the entire applicant pool and in December it defers majority of applicants to a Feb decision, rejects a significant minority and admits only a low percentage at that time. Thus, do not be surprised by a deferral in December.

err chances are unlikely…but you can probably get into DGS and transfer for sophomore year. I think it’s helpful if you mention what math course you are taking…AP Calc B/C might do it.
