If you have two elements in the bottom quarter, then that puts you in the bottom 1/16th of the pool, roughly.

Remember that apps are up about 25% over last year already.

Not true at all (since 1/16 assumes independence), the correlation between high school gpa and act/sat test results is very high, on the order of 0.7-0.8. An applicant with grade and test scores at the 25th percentile is probably in the 15th-20th percentile range of accepted applicants, disregarding other factors such as the essay and extracurriculars which are very important.

Everyone should wrap their heads around this, all of the Burdells here discouraging qualified students from applying to Tech hurt the Institute in the long run.

Early notification applicants are up (its a new program), it remains to be seen where total applicants end up. GT has over 40% out of state applicants, the recession may impact that part of the pool that is willing to pay out of state tuition. Time will tell.

You’re right. I should have said 1/16th of the admitted student pool, not applicants.

The total freshman applicant pool for last year was ~57% non-GA.

Most states do not have a top-tier engineering program, so those students will continue to look at non in-state options. Of the non in-state options, an out of state public school like Tech is cheaper than a private school. I suspect Tech will see more high-quality applications (from the people that would normally just apply to a places like Duke or MIT + an in-state safety). Those students will be admitted and will then wait on scholarship/grant/fin-aid packages before making a decision.

Where did you see early notification numbers are up, gadzooks? I would have figured more people would have chosen to stay in their home state this year.

I agree with GP. We’re OOS with limited options for engineering so the ds has applied to GT, for just those reasons. Outstanding top-tier engineering program in the $36k/year range as opposed to $52K/year at other OOS schools.

According to GPBurdell32,

Of course, this is first year Ga Tech offer early notification. There is no reason to apply
before Oct 1 last year.

The average SAT of incoming students is 1365, which is still quite high but if you are 1350 or even low 1300, it isn’t a bad idea to apply. However, GT’s average GPA for lower division is ~2.3 so students who are not adequately prepared will have a very hard time.

idk why you’re worrying so much… I think you’re a slam-dunk case! please chance me back!!

“GT’s average GPA for lower division is ~2.3”

That’s not correct. It is more like 2.9. Also, according to GT web site, 60% of students holds on Hope Scholarship (3.0 GPA) after freshman year.

Here is grade distribution for Spring 2009.

Architecture
Lower Division 3.6
Upper Division 3.5

Computing
Lower Division 2.7
Upper Division 3.3

Engineering
Lower Division 2.9
Upper Division 3.1

Science
Lower Division 2.8
Higher Division 3.1

Careful, those distributions are only for math classes.

The first thirteen pages are regarding math grade, however, if you look at page 14 of Spring semester, it has break down for each colleges.

From just looking at roughly, it matches

Thanks for sharing, jim1980. Helpful to dispel rumors that float around like that. Most people at GT do fairly well. Think how much a kid with a 1.5 or .9 brings things down, so it makes sense that 60% have over a 3.0…
