Chance me please!

Hey this is my first time so please have patience.

Im a 14 year old sophmore in SC and I hope to apply to Hotchkiss, Andover, Deerfield, Exeter, St. Paul and Choate for my junior year. Im also looking into the Bard College at Simon's Rock and the Governer's School for Math and Science, even though im more of an english/history person, as sort of safety schools. I applied to and was accepted at Portsmouth Abbey School and Salem Acadmy in 8th grade but i didn't go so now im looking into these schools. If you could help chance me that would be great :D

Academics:
I go to a school in one of the best school districts in the state (which isn't saying much since SC schools are generally horrible), I have a 3.9 GPA and am ranked 14 in a class of 352

8th Grade:

English 1 (GT/CP): 95
Algebra 1 (" "): 97

9th Grade:

English 2 H: 94
Geometry H: 92
Physical Science H: 94
World Geography: 96
French 3 H (i tested out of french 1): 96
do PE, Info Tech and High School 101 count?

10th Grade (these are only my second 6 weeks grades):

Algebra 2 H: 89 (im working on that)
World History H: 99
Biology 1 H: 98
Public Speaking: 92 (soon to be a 93)
Next semester im taking Chemistry 1 H, English 3 H, French 4 H, and either Drama 1 or Marketing 1 (both CP)

ECs:
Track and Field
Cross Country
FCA
Student Ambassadors
FBLA (I'm competing in Public Speaking)
Treasurer of Junior Civitan
I wasn't really involved in 9th grade except for Track and Field
In 8th grade i was President of my class (but only because i was unopposed) and i was a member of the year long chorus class that recieved a Superior at a festival or something at Carowinds. I was also a Student Ambassador.
I did Taekwondo outside of school for a year or two but i don't do it anymore.

Honors and such:
In 7th grade i was a Duke Tip Scholar or something for getting a 1500 or so on the SAT
In 8th grade i was a Junior Scholar for scoring a 70 (99th percentile) on the reading(?) and above a 50 in the other catagories on the PSAT.
In 9th grade i attended the National Young Leaders State Conference
This year i will be attending the National Young Leaders Conference in DC in the spring and i was invited to the Global Young Leaders Conference in China or NY for the summer of 2010 yesterday :D

Something Interesting about me:
Im an mk (missionary kid) cause my parents are missonary doctors so we've moved around alot. I was born in Nigeria, when i was 5 months old we moved to Niger where my parents were doctors, 4 years later we moved to Saskatchewan, 2 years later we moved to Quebec (where i learned to speak french), 1 year later we moved back to Niger, 3 years later i went to boarding school (6th grade) for 3/4 of the year and then we moved here, SC.
Will that help on my application? Also should i apply as a repeat sophmore because it would be easier to get accepted and it would make up for my age.
If you could help chance me that would be great! Thanks in advance!

Oh i also scored in the 95th percentile or so on the SSAT when i took it in 8th grade and my grades would probably be better if i actually tried which i intend to do the rest of this school year
Will i have to retake the SSAT since ive already taken it?
Thanks!!

Heyyy –> Wow, your chances are really high. I mean, most of those schools only accept from 5 to 30 juniors a year, but I think being a missionary kid makes you much more unique. Your grades are good, you’ve got good ECs, and your SSAT score is really good. You should probably think about re-taking it; I dont think the SSAT scores last that long (3 years?). I think you could easily get accepted to Governor’s School, and maybe even Choate. St. Pauls only accepts 15 Juniors, so that might be a reach. Andover, on the other hand, accepts 25, so you might be able to get in. Exeter might be reach, as well as Deerfield. You could PROBABLY get into Hotchkiss, but they’re very selective. So, good luck! Oh, and are you planning on interviewing/touring the school, cause the interview plays a pretty important part on the application process. Good luck!

Oh, and as for applying as a repeat sophomore, I have been faced with the same dilemma. I actually don’t think you should, even though it does increase your chances of getting in. If you do repeat, you’d still be taking all the classes you would have in 11th grade, and, by the time you reach your senior year, there will only be so much classes left to take…Your chances are already high enough, so you probably shouldn’t repeat, but its your choice. Anyways, good luck again. And, hopefully I’ll see you next year at Choate =]

Thanks! I wasn’t sure how i would do the repeat sophmore thing anyway so thats cool.
Darn, i really didn’t want to take the SSAT again! :(, oh well
I’ll probably do a phone interview because SC is a long way from New England and thats pretty expensive :/, but i did a phone interview for Portsmout and Salem and they both seemed to go well. I might be able to do an interveiw in person with an alumni in the area tho.
About the tours, probably won’t do that for the same reason but i might if i can do it while im in DC for NYLC even thought we’re advised not to tour during a holiday.
Hope to see you to!

Question: I don’t do much volunteering or community service, althought I do do some, will that hurt my chances?

Yeah, I’m doing phone interviews as well. Actually, some schools offer interviews through skype, so I think I might do that instead. I checked with all the schools Im applying to whether or not they had any alumni in my area to interview, but, since I live in Honduras, they said they didn’t :frowning: so, Skype it is! =] Yeah, I wanted to tour and interview during winter break, but they dont offer tours or interviews :'(

As for the community service, I dont think it will hurt that much; you do have plenty of other extra-curricular activities.

Skype? Awsome! Thats definatly a possiblity then.
It might be easier to find an alumn in SC, but I’ll ask

Thats true, and I do do community service through Jr Civitan so that should help

Hahaha, yeah =]

Annd, as for the community service, that sounds like enough. You dont want to have TOO many extra-curriculars; the schools will tell that your just trying to fill your application.

Oh, and, have you registered for the SSAT yet? That might be something you want to start to take into account. I think you need to register a few weeks prior to the test date, and it takes about a month for your score report to get released. So, you should probably register for the December test soon. :)

WOW! I totally forgot! Thank you SOO much! I will definatly get on that

Hahahaha, you’re welcome…

Your stats are really impressive, now just ace that SSAT and good luck with the rest of the process. Also, how did your interview go and how’s your essay coming along? :D

This isn’t going to sound good but I just sent for information on Wednesday because it took me forever to talk to my dad so Im still waiting for application information. I can probably get started on the SSAT website though.
Do you think I’ll still be able to make the Jan. 1 deadline?
Also, will not taking a tour or having a face to face interview on campus affect my chances?
Thanks!

bump 10char

yeah it will b/c they really like to macth your application with a face

What about a Skype interview? And what if I send in a picture with my application?

I don’t think having a phone interview will affect you that much because they understand some people just don’t have the money to go there. And some schools like kids who need money; they love anything that shows diversity. So unlike what golfkid said it could actually raise your chances.

What do you think of my chances of getting into the schools?

So does anyone honestly think i have a chance at schools like Exeter or Deerfield?

Good Stats. Good Stuff. Good Acceptance Letter come March 10.
