Hi all,

I would really appreciate if you guys could chance me for the following colleges: Penn, Cornell, NYU Stern, Brown, and (gasp) Yale. I know that most of these will probably be a reach, but I want to hear what you guys say.

Right now I am a freshman at UMich.

Stats:

SAT: 2180
SAT 2s:
-Math 1 and 2: 750
-History: 700

HS GPA: 3.5 (ouch)
College GPA: Hopefully 3.925 this semester, and hopefully a 4 next semester.

I have a few ECs, and I think I can make them out to sound good. My obvious problem is a bad HS GPA. The reason is, during HS I didn't really try and was more concerned with learning everything I could about the subjects I love: finance and economics. This is a huge plus for me in college when I will major/ take econ courses because they are frankly a breeze. However, this doesn't change my HS gpa. Is there some way I can convey this to them?

your HS gpa will make you noncompetitive for yale, as they say that if you weren’t a competitive freshman applicant then you won’t be a competitive transfer applicant. don’t waste your money. either way, since you’re aiming for mostly ivies, i suggest applying for fall of junior year. since you’re applying to stern, does this mean you’re a business major? or i guess econ, now that i’m looking at what you said about econ. that said, these are competitive majors to get in to at almost all of those schools, do i saw pick 2 of the ivies to apply to and then pick a safety or 2.

Also, is it a disadvantage for a prospective Cornell transfer if you apply to both CAS and ILR? I want to do econ, so it makes sense for me to apply to both, but I just hope they don’t see this as me trying to “sneak” in like some try.

you can’t apply to 2 schools as a transfer, so that won’t work. CAS is way more selective, so i suggest ILR, but ILR isn’t all about econ. there’s only your basic econ courses and the rest really is more human resources related.

Alas another question. This semester I took 2 courses taught by TAs and 2 by professors. I think I will need 2 recommendations for my schools. Is it important they are from PhDs, or can it be just from TAs? And also, if they require 2, are 3 permissible? The reason is, I think my advisor can write me a great one, and I would really want that. Thanks again.

they should be from who ever knows you best and can write about your personal qualities. if you’re using the commonapp, there’s a place on the college official’s report form that has room for your advisor to attach a LOR, so no need to get a separate one from them.
