As an international student applying for financial aid, your chances are very slim to begin with. Your composite ACT score–but even more so, your performance on the science section–all but obliterates your chances if you are, as I am assuming, an engineering applicant (Middle 50% Range for Pratt 2013 was 33-35 composite). But who knows; your rank, ECs, essays, recs, etc. might do the trick.

Best of luck, but I must tell you: it doesn’t look good.

You are right, Biner! i know duke is not a reach for me! but, what goes for applying…hehe…anyways, i am also applying to the following colleges:
-williams
-grinnell
-vassar
-gettysburg
-oberlin
-whitman
-caltech
-dartmouth
-rice

can you please chance me for these, too? i am really worried…:(…i really need your comments!

lazyboy, I’m afraid that the only college you listed about which I know much of anything is Rice. Assuming you were applying to engineering there as well, I would say you have a decent chance, seeing as how they are in the process of trying to improve their image both nationally and internationally by enrolling more out-of-state students and more internationals. You’ve got a better shot there than at Duke, in my opinion, but it is by no means a lock.

On a side note, that is a very scattered list you have, with LACs like Williams, Grinnell, and Oberlin, Unis like Duke and Rice, and even a Tech Institute in Caltech. You should probably give more thought to what you’re looking for in a college and the type of experience you would most enjoy.

yes! My list looks funny, i know…hehe…but, even in LACs, my interest is do to a dual degree(math and engineering)…still, my priority is LACs…any by the way, where are you applying, biner?

lazyboy, I was accepted ED to Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering. Had that not worked out, though, I would have applied to four other schools: Ohio State (in-state), Case Western Reserve, Vanderbilt, and Rice.

I do not believe there are engineering classes at most LACs. I think at Williams you have to do 3 years at Williams and then 2 years somewhere else. That ACT will be tough at the top LACs - is English not your first language?

congratulations Biner! Glad to hear someone going to Pratt…by the way, can you post your stats please? (if you don’t mind, actually!…by the way, where do you come from?

Behrumt, you are right! yes, i want to join a 3-2 program in any of the LACs i get in…and, yes, english is not my first language! and, where are you applying?

lazyboy, I don’t feel like posting them all over again, but you can easily search my posts and click on the one I made in the ED Decisions thread on the Duke subforum.

yes i got it…thanks buddy!

Lazyboy, just be patient and confident. No one on college confidential, as a matter of fact, nobody at all except the admissions can tell you your chance of getting in. Duke loves diversity, and the fact that you are an international student already shines on your application. Im not sure what language the people of nepal speak, but they will definitly consider that when it comes to standardized testing. Good luck wish you the best!!

Thank you FastFurious…I wish you were there in the admissions committee :P…

Your application looks to busy, lazyboy. jk
